Re: well vented helmet

Plus the rudy comes with a peak. I've never used it but it's there if you need.

Re: well vented helmet

I have a rudy project sterling.

Very good helmet. Comes with either a mesh liner or the standard padding. You can swap between as you want.

It's well vented and I've never suffered in it. Always feel cool and not at all stifled.

It helps that the mesh liner has a sort of chamois material that has contact with the head

Best helmet I've ever owned. At £100 it's a bit steep but I feel worth it.

Re: Gears skipping and/or struggling to shift

The point about the rear hanger maybe being bent is an interesting one. I'll check the bike out later.

I've had a couple of issues with this bike actually. The bottom bracket had to be replaced under warrantee after only 500 miles as it was creaking loudly.

Hope these issues aren't a sign of problems to come as its a great ride. When it's having a good day it's comfy and fast - and can easily take me 60-80 miles on a good day ride.

Re: Gears skipping and/or struggling to shift

I understand they mean breaking in to be that the cables are stretching and stuff.

To be fair the original lbs have been great but i suspect they could not replicate the issue on the work stand. Each time they said only minor tweaking was required

Could a lack of adequate lube on the chain cause shifting irregularities like this? Yesterday, while parked up at work, my bike got caught in the crossfire between the spray of two jet washers. And aside from being very mucky with grit afterwards I noticed when I stopped to inspect things after the first shifting misfire, the chain felt dry despite only being lubed that morning.

Don't suppose this would explain the other times though.

Gears skipping and/or struggling to shift

I have a problem with the gears in my 105 groupset Scott S20.

I've had it since February and all was fine for first few months but recently gears have been slipping and sometimes do not change when I shift up or down. Sometimes it takes three or four clicks of the trigger to get the chain to move cogs at all. It's also noisy and clunky.

Sometimes to get the chain to "sit" properly on the rear cog I have to shift between the two chain wheels at the front until I can hear it running smoothly.

I've had it in with the LBS twice and each time they serviced the gears and said it was normal breaking in behaviour. Each time the shifting seemed ok on ride home from shop, but on next big rid the skipping and shifting problems appeared again.

This time the shop changed all gear cabling and set up the gears again. Same thing. Ok on way home. Big ride next day resulted in shifting problems.

I'm taking it to another shop on Saturday who say it sounds like a simple problem of gears not being indexed properly. I understand that, and hope that is the case, but find it a little worrying that the LBS have not been able to fix a simple issue.

I mean, could there be some other underlying problem causing the shifting issues to reappear other than simple indexing?

Way of the Roses (alternative end point)

Thinking of doing this route to York, with the end point shifting north a little to Whitby so I can come back on the Walney to Wear/Whitby route.

Is the WOR a good route in a general? I've read some good things but others saying its a bit dull?

I have no experience of cycling across the NY moors. It looks exposed, with few roads, so likely to busy with cars. Is that a fair enough assessment?

Re: More visible cycle jersey

Something reflective and a couple of decent lights would make you more visible as these dark rainy morning set in where visibility on the roads is poorer. That's a given surely.

Re: C2C in two days

I may play on the WOTR route a little and finish up at Scarborough or even Whitby itself - before heading west again on the Walney to Wear route, dropping back into the dales at some point

This seems like it would be a good mix of challenging and good scenery

Re: New Tent Advice

I'm only 5 9 so it's a good fit for me although not good for the taller man or woman

The gelert was my first "touring" tent

It was absolutely shocking and I never got a wink of sleep in it but my first few camping trips were still bags of fun

The Inn there is wonderful. As stated above, the Hartside climb is merely the first of several big ones, but not the highest, and the whole C2C is a serious challenge. Great fun too. There are far more tracks and paths than I'd realised, and it means you are slower than on roads alone.
We returned by the Reivers, staying on road after Keilder (to Newcastleton), and perhaps liked it even better. Remote Northumbria is fine for cycling, and then the section from Hesket Newmarket back to Cockermouth is really lovely.
Our route took us:
Workington - Allenheads (82 miles)
Allenheads - N Shields - Stamfordham (76)
Stamfordham - Newcastleton (60)
Newcastleton - Hesket Newmarket (about 62)
H Newmarket - Workington (30)

Your first day sounds like a real challenge! I've been thinking of stopping off first night just east of Penrith. I've no need to rush and I think too much climbing on the first day will seriously tire me out.

My only worry at the moment is how to get me and the bike to and from Whitehaven. That's a whole different challenge in itself.

Lancaster area is a bit more accessible for me which is why I've been thinking of doing the way of the roses west to east, and my own devised route east to west.

Doubt it's as challenging as the main c2c but there you go...

Re: More visible cycle jersey

Altura do a l/s version of a night vision jersey. Red or Yellow. Loads of reflective markings. I've been using one in red and feel pretty visible pre-dawn.

It's fleece lined, so a little warm for it at the moment. No doubt it will be worn more in the coming months though!

Re: A good jacket for winter - £100 budget

I had an Aldi Waterproof once. Just a basic Crane Mesh lined jacket in yellow. Someone actually nicked it from the locker room where I used to work whilst I was in the shower.

Used to work at a hospital and the staff facilities were right by the entrance. Some cretin popped in and took it off the hook and off they went.

The thing was caked in crud and stunk to high heaven. What possessed them to take that over my Rudy helmet, hung right next to it, I'll never know.

Re: C2C in two days

What are peoples experience of the ride between Penrith and Stanhope? Rough going?

Looks undulating and barren (I.e. crosswinds) so I'm guessing its slow going, especially fully laden with camping stuff. Would probably make a good day 2.

Thinking of hosteling this instead of camping anyway to be honest.
