Cycle for Health?

Hi all Noticed a video on youtube from Cycling UK entitled "Cycling- a prescription for good health" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H1vfzsCTy3o Nothing wrong with that. What is noticeable is that all the participants are wearing helmets, even when they are not on public roads. In addition...

Re: A phone with accurate GPS recording abilities

My antique Galaxy SIII mini manages reasonably accuracy on GPS using Osmand for tracking. Unfortunately it is long overdue for replacement due to the antiquity of the operating system (Jelly Bean). Probably primary age kids have much better phones- lol

Re: ** Local Election Results **

Dreadful result for Labour in Derby, 5 seats lost, 2 of them to UKIP including my ward. Not sure how this effects the council, the Tories are now the biggest party, but still with no majority, they were already in power with the support of the Lib Dems and UKIP - that alone tells me all I need to k...

Re: Mamil bikes

Judging from a fair few people doing the Tour de Yorkshire sportive, the trick is for the bike to be black- to go with the clothing, perhaps. .but actually I' not complaining, as they were busy blowing their hard earned cash in the local cafes and contributing to the local economy in God's own..

Re: What distinguishes between a mens saddle & womens saddle ?

My late Mum was very happy with the Wrights saddle that came with a Hercules Hustler that originally was mine- a bit like the Brooks B17 standard. She always had Brooks and was very happy with them. That being said I'm not convinced that ladies always need "specific" saddles- just one that...

Garsdale Head road has been resurfaced

Hi all Was up on the road between Garsdale Head and Dent station (in Cumbria) last week (the "Coal Road"). This has been resurfaced to quite a high standard, not just the usual chippings job you get on unclassified roads. Even on 25 mm tyres it was quite comfortable- or as comfortable as y...

Re: The perils of 23 mm tyres …

Not had problems with 23s- but there again, apart from (smooth tarmacced canal towpaths) never used them offroad- apart from one occasion many years ago, going over the Roman road going to Bainbridge (Yorkshire Dales)- not my idea, was with someone else at the time. Tyre in question was Worthy Blue ...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

The figures are easy for manipulation. I remember a few years ago Stellus Savaloy or whatever the guy who invented Sqeeziejet was called, justified adding extra seats to his already crowded planes claming it reduced the amount of CO2. Of course it didn't reduce it at all: it merely reduced the per ...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

My impression of it all is that some of the demands of the protestors are not entirely realistic, which rather detracts from what was a useful protest putting forward an important message about climate change. I know many people take the view that "why don't they protest in India and China, giv...

Re: Mamil bikes

So basically you get a fast bike with a harsh ride that you need to use fatter tyres with- in a dismal black colour. Great. Not interested.. So it's simple - don't buy one. But who says you need the fatter tyres? Tech has moved on, there's plenty of evidence that for most riders there's no disadvan...

Re: Extinction Rebellion

You'll never get individuals to change their ways, governments are the only way forward with stuff like this if for no other reason than a lot of the required changes require top down management. If we relied on that then we're as good as dead already. It would be nice if the government did act, bu...

Mamil bikes

Or maybe called "sportive bikes". Either way, there seems to be a definite trend here: 1. Fast frames with racing pretensions but slightly modified eg more relaxed geometry for sportive riders. 2. All carbon 3. Clearance for wider tyres only possible without mudguards- but in any case no m...

Re: Should we stop using the word 'cyclists'?

I was told i was not a proper cyclist and that people like me make life hard for all other cyclists .... because i don't wear a helmet. Wow. I entertain a vain hope that didn't come from an actual cyclist- but there again, it wouldn't surprise me if it did. The fact that most people who are ...
