Re: The end of unpowered cycling?

I bought my first E-Bike thing morning, the previous owner (a woman) didn't like being on the road and gave up after 3 rides. It's weird thing, 3 batteries in a plastic cover that clips to the down tube, indicators, a rack, gigantic mirrors, a top box (!) and large metal front basket . It is hideous...

Re: The end of unpowered cycling?

There IS growing interest, electric bike articles are hitting mainstream non-cycling related media outlets, I've seen 2 today in the Sunday papers. I work at a place with 1000's of employees, there are less than 10 bikes on-site at any time, but 3 or 4 are electric (traffic gridlocked hills in every...

Re: The end of unpowered cycling?

Are they as green as unpowered bicycles? Well no of course not, but I think we've come to the conclusion in this thread that the people using them aren't likely to be the same people who currently use an unpowered bike for transport. Yes they will be if they live in hilly places. I have to cross Br...

Re: Reducing pannier weight

For crossing France and Spain I took 5.5.kg of luggage, that included tools, spares and the panniers, I was happy seeing that at the airport weigh in. I used Sport Direct sandals like these http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41QGPYyNaqL._SX395_.jpg , about £25 for cycling and walking, £2 flip flo...

Re: Has technology changed touring?

Digital cameras are great, although I seem to be the only person using them, not a phone, nowadays. ATM's are the best modern things for me, prior to them money issues were such a pain. When I tour I don't take a phone, I don't want to "contactable" (turning one off does not solve this pro...

Re: The end of unpowered cycling?

I do think electric bikes will struggle whilst they still (generally) look so drab, particularly from the main manufacturers. Who wants to spend a lot of money on a dreary thing?

Re: The end of unpowered cycling?

I'd buy one, because I live in Bradford and having to cross it in a 5 mile commute needs thighs like Miguel Indurain. The Leeds/Bradford conurbation is a hilly and gridlocked nightmare and they would make perfect sense here as commuting transport. Trouble is, if I don't like the look of something th...

Re: Panniers as airline baggage

I use Ikea bags with a bungee, they weigh practically nothing, are very strong and on arrival fold flat into the bottom of a pannier. £1/£2.

Re: Good Pannier or Rear Rack for Dawes Discovery?

OP, I have a Discovery 501, I've had a 201, 301 and a 401 too, they have taken me across countries and do the weekly food shopping too! I have had umpteen racks but the best, by far, is suggested by "foxyrider", the Tourtec. I would suggest a Tortec Expedition rack http://www.jejamescycles...

Yes, for day trip it is perfect, it's lovely little City, totally different to the other Spanish enclave (dump) Melilla.

Re: Obesity 'is a disability' - EU courts rule

TBH I think this is the problem, food that's 'bad' food is available cheaply, cooked in fat and or full of sugar and salt, and worst of all it's tastes OK. Soft drinks are the same. I'm always surprised how many health workers are overweight and smoke :? Yep, never seen so many smokers as I have at th...

Re: Obesity 'is a disability' - EU courts rule

You can explain and educate all you want, but when an (artificially tasty) kebab, chips and can of pop costs £1.99, people will continue to get fatter. This sort of "food" is too cheap, 12" pizzas for .99p, eat one and your body will still tell you it's hungry, so what do you do? Eat ...

Re: Multi Function Watches

Interesting article, but the bar chart only goes back to 2007 and they're only discussing smart watches etc. Maybe wrist "watches" sales are on the rise now, but what happened in the past 200 years with respect to consumerism? OP is asking about Multifunction Watches. I'm suggesting that ...

Re: Multi Function Watches

This day and age, wristwatches aren't needed so much and sales have slumped. Nonsense. I think the sales of wristwatches are at an all time high, if I am wrong then they have still increased year on year since 2007. Not what I read, and I remember an article on Radio4 about it. Maybe they were refe...

Re: Multi Function Watches

Simon, the Casios are indeed classics, the amount of fakes around for such a cheap watch is incredible!
