Re: How much to pay for a second hand bike?

I've paid varying prices in the last 2 years, IMO, all were good value, until I can afford a new bike then I'll have to look at the second hand market. £50 - GT Outpost 1990's MTB, had it 2 years now, guards and rack on it, does the trails, canal rides and shopping, I have no need for suspension or ...

Re: Is a Hybrid Suitable for Touring?

Easy peasy, I have hybrid but bought a Dawes Horizon to tour, found I preferred the hybrid for long distances....................all the way to Barcelona in fact. :D

Re: Is my bike suitable for long tour?

Mike, Your bike is fine and definitely fit for purpose unless you are travelling long distances over VERY rough terrain. Perhaps the only thing I'd do if you haven't already done so is change the tyres to something more puncture resistant. Stephen. Stephen has said it. I've just sold mine on here h...

Re: Rome to Barcelona in August

Oops, should have said. If you use the train for the airport, you can't go direct from that coast line, you'll need to make a change from L2 to L1, (at Placa Catalunya I think). It's cheap though and there is plenty of bike room but you miss a really nice ride!

Re: Rome to Barcelona in August

That's more comforting to hear. What would it be like to cycle from Badalona to the airport, or would it be better to jump on a train. I'll likely be camping in el masnou and getting a mid morning flight and planning to dismantle the bike in the airport. It's true too, you won't be of any interest ...

Re: Rome to Barcelona in August

Getting mugged is now worrying a bit. I'd say that it's hardly worth worrying about and I visit Barcelona/Badalona 3 or 4 times a year on a loaded bike. It's now as if people expect to be mugged as soon as they set foot in the City's boundaries, it's crazy and simply not true! I'd agree that petty ...

Re: Dawes Horizon good choice for first touring bike?

I bought a Dawes Horizon, I already had a Dawes Discovery 501 but wanted a comfier long distance bike as I had an autumn trip to Barcelona planned. I spent all last summer getting to grips with it, quality wise, I could not fault it, but, suprisingly, I found the Discovery more comfortable. The good...

Re: Recommend 700 wheels for touring?

I do a lot of rough towpath riding (Leeds- Skipton) and 32's are not good enough, I changed from 32's to 35's and they made a big difference. Some sections are rough on my MTB with 50's so I'd say 35's are a must.

Re: How to reduce midge bites

I'm a midge/mozzie magnet too, I react so badly that even one or two bites are enough to ruin a good few days. Avon So Soft does work but the need to re-apply means I don't use it, I think of nothing else but re-application. I only use and trust Autan, cover myself at 4pm and that'll see me through ...

Re: Spa Cycles (Harrogate)

Well, having read plenty of these posts I made a point of going to Spa. Not so far for me, my local LBS's are Ellis Briggs, which, if it changed it's display lights once a decade I might be able to see something and buy it. The other is All Terrain at Saltaire, super clean modern showrooms with disi...

New in

Hi, been a member of Cyclechat for a few years but time to introduce myself here at CTC. I'm 49 and started to ride (again) at 42, I had arthritis in my hips, a legacy of football and accidents, I didn't want to cycle, what with being lardy and unfit but I'd run out of things to try that would maybe...
