Re: Recommendation for touring bike

Yes I agree re wheels for touring but my Hobootleg came with 26” Alex wide rims with 36 spokes, Sora 130mm hubs and 35mm tyres. I asked St John Street cycles to make me a pair of Mavic narrow rims with 32 spokes, Sora hubs and I put on 28mm tyres. I ordered them on a Wednesday and they were delivere...

Re: Recommendation for touring bike

Actually one of the reasons I bought my first Cinelli hobo was because it had a short wheelbase (1001cm) and was described as having Cyclecross geometry but it also had very little toe overlap, which as you folk may know is usually a real problem with small bikes. My previous ‘touring bikes’ were, R...

Re: Recommendation for touring bike

No worries, I never take offence! I do have to admit my Cinelli is an xs and has 26” wheels, by responsive I mean it doesn’t feel like you are dragging a large trailer! Oh and I’m 61k (at the moment). But we digress...the op wants a touring bike but what is a touring bike? The answer earlier is the ...

Re: Recommendation for touring bike

For those worrying about the 130mm OLN on the Cinelli hobootleg, you may be interested to know the bike took part in the 2013 Tour d’Afrique. Check it out, google ’ Cinelli Hobootleg Tour d’ Afrique 2013’, the video at the bottom is very entertaining, but the bike is one tough cookie, they certainly...

Re: Recommendation for touring bike

Nothing rides like my Cinelli hobootleg loaded up, you have to ride one to understand, it is SO responsive, unlike the other many tourers I have ridden. One reviewer wrote that he wants to be buried with his Hobootleg! Try and find a secondhand one, not very easy, which says a lot about the bike.

Re: Recommendation for touring bike

Derekn, I would seriously consider a Cinelli Hobootleg, it’s a steel touring/cross bike. It will take front and rear carriers and the frames are all treated with anti corrosion. It is the best bike I have ever owned, you can ride it all day it is so comfortable. All the people who own these bikes se...

Re: Help with Campag triple compatibility.

Well that’s nice to know Brucey. I nearly didn’t bother putting the old Shimano FD on after the 2018 new Shimano Sora model didn’t work but luckily I tried it and it worked a treat. I shall pay more attention in future at the cycle jumbles, usually FD are in abundance, I now know why!

Re: Help with Campag triple compatibility.

Yes as you said, I shall leave well alone at the moment but I may well try again sometime. I shall keep my eyes open when next at a cycle jumble, they may be my best chance at getting something compatible and usually the people selling the old parts seem to know what the item is capable of. I do hav...

Re: Help with Campag triple compatibility.

Yes thanks De Sisti it came as a eureka moment when it worked for me! Why on earth there are 6 clicks when only 2 are needed makes it all a tad confusing, but we know, don’t we! Thanks for the offer of your Campag Champ FD which I didn’t need in the end, very kind of you. I think I may go to Italy a...

Re: Help with Campag triple compatibility.

Thanks Brucey for that very useful information not just for me but anyone else reading this section, I will certainly do more homework next time! I think my brain was in Shimano mode, thinking Veloce triple 10 spd would work with the rest of a Veloce 10 spd triple, which generally works with Shimano...

Re: Help with Campag triple compatibility.

it will only go up if I hold the ergo lever over to the full right Rather than push the lever to the end of its movement, I would make the change in two steps. A few clicks to shift the front mech so it is just about touching the chain, release the lever, then a few clicks more to shift the front m...
