Re: Cyclist stopped 3 times by police
Got to agree with Zulu on this one. In a perfect world we'd all expect everyone to stick to the laws of the road, be an IAM Advanced driver, the young petrol heads suddenly realise that that boring old fart is actually right, that all drivers have perfect eyesight and the incompetent doddery old buggers give up driving before they're forced to because of an accident. We'd also love to see the Police standing at every junction, pulling up drivers for using phones, motorcycles with noisy exhausts and the DM favourite, cyclists not stopping for red lights. That ain't going to happen in this world or the next.
As a driver, motorcyclist and cyclist I take the attitude they're all out to get you. Yes, I can wear hi-viz and my motorbike's got more lights on it than a fairground Waltzer, but I ride defensively, think about my visibility, my position in the road and many other factors, i.e. to look after No.1, nobody else is going to do for it me.
So where does this leave us. My attitude, sometimes you've got to swallow your pride, accept that even though you might be in the right, today's the day to park it at the door. Ride safely, get home and live to fight another day.

Re: North Coast 500
Watch out for the incompetents driving hired motorhomes. They don't know the size of their vehicles, don't know how to use passing places and are looking at the scenery not the road. That aside, don't forget to slow down and smell the roses. If the weather's good, (and the midge aren't out), you'll struggle to find anywhere finer in the UK.

Re: Dawes Galaxy Twin Value?
Hi All, Thanks for your replies so far and looking at the 'sold' listings on Ebay it looks rather depressing. As has been said there's some good quality tandems that have only gone for £250.00, sometimes less. Maybe I'll just hang onto it instead.

Dawes Galaxy Twin Value?
Hi All, In about '98 I bought a 531 Dawes Galaxy Twin with a Stepped Top-Tube from SJSC. It came with a drag brake, the proper hubs, rack, mudguards etc and was at the time their top of the range tourer. My better half & I did a few day rides, toured for one week in Brittany and being blunt that was about it. In truth the bikes done no more than about 250miles and it's been stored either in the house or in a dry garage ever since. I've now recommissioned it with new tyres, cables, bar tape etc, it's as good as new, however my better half's knee problems probably mean she'll never be able to ride it again. It's got to go.
So, bearing in mind you're not going to find another one with either so few miles on it or in such good, or both, a question for those that keep a better eye on market values. What's it worth?

Re: iWoc one
I've been using one on my Orbea Gain since 2018 and I'm still here!
There are three things I don't like:-
1/ You DO take your eyes off the road to look down when you change power levels
2/ Forward planning is everything, as in looking ahead and not taking your hands off the bars when you're approaching a rough section of road or your going downhill very fast and realise you've got an equally steep uphill coming up and want to be in a higher power band. Again taking your hand of the bars probably isn't the best if ideas.
3/ You have to cycle through the power level to go to a lower power level.
In practice you get used to it.

Re: Who is liable?
The answer to that is very simple. We live in world where it's always someone else's fault. Can I blame someone else? It's a nice easy route for not taking responsibility for one's own actions. I blame schools, no wrong answers, no winners or loosers on sports days and all that cr*p.Airsporter1st wrote: ↑7 Feb 2023, 2:42pm This is so obviously a no-brainer, that I wonder at the OP’s motive for asking the question in his first ever post.

Re: Waterproof Cycling Jacket
Or tourist, leisure riders or commuters . As the OP said I want something that's easy to pack to chuck on on the way home after work if it's started raining. When I used to walk to work I did just that, I'd didn't jog or run, or wear silly shorts, I walked, in normal clothes, with a jacket & umbrella as necessary. When I cycled to work, yes it was faster, but there was no need to break into a sweat and I didn't need a shower at work. Not all of us go out riding at our max heart rates or search for KOM points on every ride and for a commuting jacket Gore-Tex is as good as any, and if you buy a last years model that not using the latest all signing all dancing material, bargains can be had.rogerzilla wrote: ↑15 Nov 2022, 8:03am If you run on the hot side, like I do, there is no such thing as a jacket that keeps you dry. You can keep the rain out, but you'll still be soaked. Gore-Tex is for people who barely sweat, or walkers.

An excellent advert. Normal people, no helmets, no hi-vis and shows you don't have to be clad in lycra, racing, riding through the mud or anything else that's an 'activity' to ride a bike. My only criticism, they are still portraying people as cyclist, no, they're people on bicycles.

I'm in a similar boat to you, but for motorcycle touring, however looking on that Nordisk website the Thrymheim 3 PU looks like it would tick a lot of boxes for either, albeit at over £500.

Re: E bike rec please?
It is a long held legal principle that the 'road' or more to the point here, the rules & regulations that apply to vehicles (including ebikes) extends to many other areas other than what we wouldn't ordinarily call a 'road', even if that area is privately owned land, for example a supermarket or pub car park. Essentially if the public have lawful access to the area the rules of the road apply.David1072937 wrote: ↑5 Sep 2022, 1:02pmJdsk wrote: ↑4 Sep 2022, 8:05pm Welcome
If this is for use on public roads in the UK I recommend starting with "Electric bikes and the law: What you need to know":

Jonathan
If this is for use on public roads
It is and its isnt
Main roads are strictly off limit as cars passing noisily are not good for me (that dosnt mean to say I will fall off its not like that)
Fortunately I have many (quiet) side roads locally.
There is one route which is mainly a disused A road.
This driving solicitor explains it better than I can.

What it boils down to is that if you use a modified or 250w plus ebike almost anywhere that isn't private (and of course with the land owners permission), then you will be breaking the law, unless of course you've gone down the get it registered, tax & mot etc route.
