Don't forget prior to the 2015 revamp of the EAPC regs there was a 200W limit on ebike motors.

Re: Touring on the telly
If you can find a copy of "On Hannibal's Trail" it's worth a watch. Three brothers cycling on the trail of Hannibal, the warrior who marched from Spain to Rome at the head of an invading army. A good bit of cycling, camping, history and brotherly love (or not as it may be).

I gave up when the CTC rebranded itself CUK complete with a childish logo and forgot what the "T" bit meant.

And me. It's one of those blooming obvious things that done once on cold night you think why didn't I think of it before. Oh, and you can carry some water to drink during the day as well!

Re: Should I stop maintaining my bike?
gbnz wrote:Well, the bike was in full working order yesterday. Though in a disgusting state, for various reasons hardly even been cleaned in several months, never mind maintained! (Nb. Chain rusted, near solid, Rr tyre worn out last July, brake pads down to the mounts, strips of rust everywhere).
But still in a full working order, a 150+ odd miles last week, with a few high speed dashes.
And after a day of maintenance? Clean, but doesn't work. Chain snapped on removal, cone cross threaded rear axle on attempted removal, valve snapped on puncture free tube. Anyone else find that MAINTENANCE BACKFIRES
(Nb. Can't face the thought of stripping the front axle, bottom bracket bearings, loosening/tightening/adjusting various bolts, replacing a few damaged spokes - all stuff I've got plenty of experience in doing)
There is potentially another side to this of what happen if you are involved in a collision with something or worse someone whilst riding a bike as described above. If I were involved in an incident and spotted the offending bicycle was in poor condition and looked badly maintained then no matter whether I was in the right or wrong it'd be out with phone and photo the state of it, particularly if the tyres were worn out and the brake down to the mount. Insurance companies love looking for a get out clause and if you show them that the bicycle that hit you wasn’t in your opinion (stating of course that you’re a lifelong cyclist, responsible for a fleet of n+1 bicycles and you just wouldn’t consider riding a bicycle in such a condition in a public space), then it either strengthens your case or leaves you in sh*t street depending on which side of the fence your sitting on.
As for if the Police got involved, a vehicle examiner would have a field day with a bike such as described above, particularly if there’s a fatality or serious injury involved.

Re: Long lost Thermarest mattress
I don't know if this will work or not, but close the valve and give it a bit of gentle heat, a hair drier or proping it up next to a radiator should do it and let physics do the rest. At worst it'll soften the fabirc to help it unroll.

Re: MIO Cyclo 200 Battery
Yes me. It's few years ago now and I did it on a 505 but they're very similar.
In practice it was quite easy, the hardest part was having the courage to actually prise the unit open. I used a triangle guitar pick for this and in reality it wasn't half as bad as I thought. The battery I bought had a higher capacity but was a direct replacment and once the unit was open was easy to change. Everything clicked back together and having put up with a ever declining capacity battery for ages I thought to myself given how hard it wasn't, why didn't you change it earlier.

Change the tent for a Nordisk Telmark 2 LW. Similar price & spec to the Lizard but over 1/2kg lighter.

Re: Foam sleeping mats
I've got one of these: https://www.nemoequipment.com/product/cosmo-3dA Okay it's not foam, it's not cheap and it's not exactly light weight either, but combined with one of these: https://www.nemoequipment.com/product/riff-mens/ the combination had given me the best nights sleeping I've ever had in a tent. Oh, and did I mention the down pillow: https://www.seatosummit.co.uk/products/ ... wn-pillow/

This is as inaccurate and misleading and distracting as "Very fine people on both sides".
1 The police and security services in the UK have increasingly and repeatedly warned about the scale and danger of right-wing terrorism in the UK. There has been nothing similar for any left-wing activities. For example:

2 Violent behaviour at political demonstrations in the UK related to EU Membership has been overwhelmingly by supporters of Leaving. For example:

Thanks Jonathan
TM is misguided in thinking that violence comes from both ends of the political spectrum,it's been overwhelmingly from the rightwing and egged on by it's promoters the likes of Farage who,as it so happens,is a major Trump suckholer
Sorry but your wrong, I'm old enough to remember the Baader–Meinhof Group, Action Directe and the Red Brigades to name just a few that fought violent campains in the name of Far Left politics. Okay they may not be active nowadays but they kidnapped, bombed & killed hundres in the name of their cause.

No sign that it is intended to be waterproof.
Just be aware that a 'Soft Shell' doesn't normally prove any insulation. Sure they help by keeping the cold air out, but just as you would if you only wore gore-tex jacket, you need to wear something underneath if you want to keep warm. Soft Shells do however offer a degree of waterproofness IF they are pre-treated with a DWR coating. This treatment won't keep heavy rain out for long, but decent ones ought to cope with a light shower and the winter morning's mist & mizzle, (just remember to wash then with the right stuff tho').

Re: Why does nobody want paper maps anymore?
I have a few 'Historic' Maps of my local and not so local area and one of my err, pleasures is to go our for ride just using the old map. Okay, sometimes I've had to push along the odd green lane or byway, but it's suprisingly good fun what you either come across that isn't marked on new maps or what you think should be there but has long since disapeared. Or maybe I'm just wierd.

Re: wider tyre on back or front?
Does anyone know what the front/back weight percentages are on your typical bike?
Does your typical Dutch style upright bike have more weight over the rear and does a dropped bar roadster have more on the front? And if there is a significant difference, how would that affect this whole front/back tyre winter grip question?

Re: Butterfly bars
Assuming the brakes, shifters etc can be swapped to the butterfly bars without any hassle, then yes I would expect a bike shop to fit them as part of the deal, but I also think it wouldn't be unreasonable for them to charge you for the actual bars & tape. Margins are tight nowadays, but they're paying the mechanic regardless. A you pay for parts and we'll fit them for free deal is fair to both parties.
