Re: Newbie considering cycling in London - help!

Central London's unfortunate record of cycling deaths is largely due to inexperienced cyclists jumping in at the deep end. As an experienced cyclist I find it safer than most other places in the UK simply because traffic is usually slower and more processional. Absolute nonsense. The unfortunate re...

Re: What am I looking for

Coming from a hybrid I guess that you are used to a comfortable position on the bike with the handlebars level with the saddle or even a tad higher. The problem with most drop bar bikes is their agressive position with handlebars below the saddle, good for aerodynamics and ok for flexible younger so...

Re: Big guy on a bike

How tall are you? German "XXL" bikes are heavywieght rated but generally come in large frame sizes. Eg. Kalkhoff Agattu XXL is rated for 170kg. I don't know who sells Kalkhoff in the UK apart from 50 Cycles who specialise in ebikes but also sell a limited range of Kalkhoff bicycles, they'r...

Re: Foot cramp

I also used to suffer foot numbness basically caused, I beleive by constant pressure on the same part of the foot whilst using trainers and touring type pedals. Following advice I tried SPD pedals and clip in cycling shoes but found this very uncomfortable. I finally solved the problem by switching ...

Re: very very clever?!? Glasgow bus stop built in cycle lane

Yes but the cycle lane has been there for a couple of years, so why if they want a bus stop in that location didn't they put the bus stop on the pavement where they normally are? Routing the cycle lane behind the bus stop is crazy when it was there first 9 Wandsworth council have done it the other ...

Re: Pedestrians' view of bells ?

I have found pedestrians to generally respond well to a bell. NB Pedestrians NOT dog walkers incapable of controlling their dogs and incapable of accepting that their pooches can be a nuisance and a menace. This tribe often doesn't respond to a bell or to anything else.

Another vote for Vittoria Randonneur pros, another option which I find comfortable are Marathon Supremes, they're also light.

Re: Advice on new bike under Cycle to Work

Suspension done right can be a good thing. Much of the general anti suspension sentiment is, I think, based upon 2 premises: Firstly, a riding on road premise, suspension isn't required if one mostly rides on road or goodish paths, fat tyres (35mm - 42mm) will suffice for even quite poor surfaces. I...

Better stuff than the Bike Show.

Boardman should do his own show.

I would just like to see a tad more on the technical stuff.

ITV4 Cycling Show

Having looked forward to watching a programme about cycling what did I get? 100% cycling as a sport....lycra and road bike riders and yet more lycra and road bike riders, with a little bit of MTB racing. Boring! Nothing on utility and leisure cycling and bikes, no wonder that so many are put off cyc...

Re: Pollution - another problem

Wow! others are starting to realise that many PSVs are the worst polluters instead of always bashing cars. Oxford Street in London is one of the most polluted roads in the country...and guess what....motor traffic on Oxford Street comprises almost exclusively buses and taxis.

Re: Sabotage and hatred: what have people got against cyclis

I tend to agree with beardy, although some people dislike cyclists and would like to ban them from using roads it is a big step from there to trying to cause serious injury or death. Probably more a case of an unhinged individual who would be better accomodated at Broadmoor.

Re: Thinking of getting an e-bike

I agree. The E-bikes I saw were HUGE. I reckon a 20stone pro wrestler could have fitted on them. The 'bars must've been 6" higher than the tops of my bike, and they were maybe a yard wide. The grips were huge and the saddle equally so. Yes. the saddle could be lowered very low, but the frame w...

Re: Thinking of getting an e-bike

3 things to concentrate on when selecting an ebike: 1. Drive system, crank motor or hub motor. Bosch, Panasonic and Impulse crank motors are good with Bosch probably being the best. Hub motors mounted in the back wheel are preferable to those mounted in the front wheel as they provide better tractio...

Re: Security - 2 questions

Is the cable lock through the front wheel to stop the wheel being stolen or to give a stronger impression about security to potential thieves. I ask as I was wondering if people thing those special front axel thingys (Atomic 22? Pitlock?) are a suitable alternative to a carrying a cable lock for th...
