Bells

I have just read the suggestion that bells on bikes should be compulsory. I regularly use a shared path and have a bell on one bike and ring it when approaching pedestrians and most don't hear it because they are wearing ear phones. If the bell law was serious then headphones would need to be banned...

Shared space

In Budapest at the moment and it interesting to see the pavements shared by cyclists and pedestrians without anyone getting upset. If the traffic is heavy mopeds also join in the fun and nobody seems to worry. I am not on my bike but it looks a good place to visit for cycling and I can only assume t...

Re: Ride London future

It seems SCC ha thankfully ignored the majority on this occasion and have granted permission but will not say for how long. Opposing political parties want the public opinion taken into account which as I would see it would only mean one thing, the event will stop. I have not seen one comment from C...

Re: Sportives - love them or loathe them?

I did ride London to Brighton a good few years back and got fed up with the attitude of some of the riders so did some audax events and the Dieppe Raid and really enjoyed them. We are locked in for the day with Ride London and love it and watch the sportive and then the race and in a moment of weakn...

Re: Air - conditioning in open-plan office

Sympathy as I have been in a similar position in a job I hated with aggressive management. My saviour was redundancy which triggered an early retiremement but I had to sign a gagging order. Within two weeks I was on contract visiting sites and felt great. I only had to work 9 months to achieve a goo...

Us boycott

A friend is fed up with Trump and said he was going to boycott everything American. It made me think that US cycling goods could go up in price and how difficult would it be to avoid US goods. I assume he will still use Microsoft and google so boycotting could be difficult, it just made me think in ...

Re: Protection from dogs - in India

We had three sheep dogs looking threatening in Bolivia when walking and the guide picked up some stones ready to throw. I had a dog dazed and when they were about 15 metres away a zap made them stop and a few more and they backed right off. The guide was fascinated with it and she asked to carry it ...

Empty roads?

I am not interested in the wedding or football so I am planning a sunny ride on empty roads. I wonder if it will be as good as I am hoping as clear roads are rare round here. Maybe major events on TV could be worth considering for a longer quieter ride.
Just a thought.

Re: Parking at Portsmouth or Poole

I have parked in the Hardway area of Gosport. We used the public car park that is near the boatyards so they are generally ok with people parking and sailing which is what we used to do when we had a boat down there. It is easy to get to the ferry port via the Gosport ferry and a short ride. Have no...

Using the train after Ride London

Hope this is the right forum section.
I am doing the Ride London100 this year and was not clear if I can use trains out of Waterloo to get home. Any experience of getting back ?

Re: Tour starting from Eurotunnel bike drop off in Calais

We used this route a few years ago and found it a bit tedious as the connection was not that good and cycling out of the French side not brilliant. I have changed my plans due to the strikes. Depending on where you are starting out from you could look at Portsmouth to any Brittany ferry destination ...

Re: Hybrid to Road bike and back?

I ride 28s on my touring bike which are fine but you should try the roads in Surrey. We are blessed being one of the wealthiest counties and one of the worst performing regarding potholes, most of our back lanes are awful.

Re: Strikes in France - train travel

I have changed my plans to avoid French trains and will stick to Brittany Ferries as I am sure Calais will be a target as it usually is. What a shame there are no Ferries from Kent to Holland as there were a few years ago.
