Re: Long day ride advice - 240 miles

Thank you all for the advice folks. Bike choice AndyB & stewartpratt - I guess I may stick to the steel tourer but will swap the tyres over as the Bontrager Hardcase are about done. Any thoughts on a comfier tyre option, possibly run at a lower pressure? Highland roads are quite narrow so the tr...

Last year I marked my (47th) Birthday with a 120 mile bike ride: http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=492247 I enjoyed last years trip that much that I am daftly planning on doubling the distance this year - 5 months to go... Enjoyable as it was I had some numbness issues up front, nop...

Re: chain lube - wet or dry?

I moved from wet lube to clean ride dry in September this year. I had expected some chain rust problems but haven'd had any such issues. Application is quick with some rags strategically placed to soak up the inevitable excess, be warned it has the viscosity of milk. Minus - 6 temperatures again thi...

Re: Waterproof

There are only 2 jackets worth considering - the Paramo Quito or the Showers Pass Elite 2.0. I went for the Showers Pass and I'm happy - not cheap £147.00 but its well tested here on Skye.....

Re: Dawes 2 Across Tandem - info please

No. The Double Edge is the Dawes MTB tandem. The 2 Across is described as a touring tandem. AFAIK A lot might depend on what you mean by MTB. MTB = off road ability, low gears, strong frame and a robust set of wheels. I don't particularly want or need a a mtb tandem so the 2 Across as a stock touri...

Re: Dawes 2 Across Tandem - info please

Thanks guys, Am I right in thinking that this is def a mtb tandem? Its not a suspension fork but the tubes are big? Mates at work were being a bit unkind about a tandem couple towing a trailer on Skye today - Tandems and Marmite....an acquired taste. I didn't see them but was tempted to chase, pass ...

Re: Dawes 2 Across Tandem - info please

Hi, Alloy frame, 48cm front, 38cm rear, yellow. 26" wheels. 27 gears, rapid-fire shifters. Sputnik Alesa rims. Rear drag brake and two rim (V) brakes. That's pretty much it, photos indicate deore brake levers at least... So its lower end of the market but option upgrades were available so could...

Dawes 2 Across Tandem - info please

Hi, Looking for some information/ spec on a Dawes 2 Across Tandem which dates back to 2000. The world wide web hasn's been able to help. Its a mtb Tandem -27 speed in a sporty yellow. I believe that production was limited to 1999 & 2000; was that for any particular reason? Asking price is £400 n...

Re: Touring wheels - advice please

I remember reading somewhere that any bike purchase, be it new or second hand is driven by two things; you are buying a frame with wheels. Any spec issues elsewhere can be tweaked and tailored to suit as your budget will allow. TREK Maverick rims are a recall item. The frame is good enough for me an...

Re: Touring wheels - advice please

A good frame is important.

Confidence in your wheels is an equal priority on an unsupported tour.

1000 miles equates to 3 summer months regular cycling for me. Investing £150 in hand built wheels makes sense.

Re: Touring wheels - advice please

Hi Meic, The wheels are now built. From this mornings discussions and your observations it appears clearer to me that the size compatibility issue was addressed by switching the axle which maintains the integrity of the build. Do you have any thoughts on the spokes or rims? donnieban An a seo fhatha...

Re: Touring wheels - advice please

Update no.2. My 520 touring frame spacing is 135mm OLN. The 105 hubs are as previously mentioned by 531Colin 130mm OLN. The 105 hubs become compatible by axle spacing. Spokes are 13/ 14g and the rims are Ambrosia Keba. The wheel build is intended to accommodate a 13.5 stone rider with loaded camping...

Hi Al,

Nothing but respect for any wisdom issued from Colin 531. Flip, still end up spending. Fair does, long term investment wise....

Guess I was aware where this was heading long before now....!
