Re: Removal of bike lanes in Canada.
i don,t know if bike lanes are somehow better in canada, but in the UK i've yet to see one that was of any benefit to me as a cyclist so my instinctive view, would be "good thing too!" even if the bloke is generally anti-bike, he may be doing cyclists an inadvertant favour.

Re: Breaking in a new leather saddle; best method?
I'd just stick it on the bike and ride it. Not really a believer in "softening" it by various treatments or receipes, which will likely just reduce its life. My B17 was fine from new, though must admit my new (two years ago) swift is still not particularly comfortable - should have just bo...

Bike clothing sizes - a moan about consistency
Why oh why o why? - to keep to the traditional start of a moan, but i've had no end of trouble getting sensible size kit. For example, i have a genuinely superb pair of wiggle / DHB "finchdean" bib 3/4 length in medium size. Decided after a while to get another pair - so fair enough, they ...

Scuba diving hints wanted -especially from non-divers not OT
The guys on yorkshire-divers.co.uk ( which is the de facto forum for scuba in the uk despite its regional name) are having a debate on cyclists, and whilst to be fair, it isn't entirely Clarkson / Daily Wail as there are some of "us" also of the diving pursuasion. However thought it might ...

Re: You're most unfavourite sky scraper
Centrepoint at the top of Charring Cross road must be a contender, defacing probably the best street for bookshops in the world. Apparently it's listed too. Pull it down I say! And I quite like some brutalist buildings too eg the Goldfinger flats, Barbican, and from the phto above, even the disparag...

Re: Porthole driving...
Got sent the company car drivers winter advice flyer from our leasing company the other day. Amongst the usual teaching-your-grandmother-to-suck eggs type of thing all written in mangement speak, they did address this very point, with the spelindid phrase "don't drive off like a tank comander&q...

Re: Water Bottle Choice?
My local supermarket does some rather good ones for around 99p. They usually have 1l and 1.5l sizes and 1l is probably best for bottle cages. Beware of the square ones which are less well suited to bottle cages. All come filled for no extra charge wi various varieties of mineral water. My favourites...

I'm pretty convinced you're having your chains pulled here. I'd have left you all to it and not have commented but a lot of effort is being put into to some of these explanations, so I'd only to persist if you're enjoying the game

Re: Will this cause an accident?
Can't see much wrong with your solution, though as others have said, it would be better if the nut had a flat surface. Bear in mind it only needs to be nipped up enough to stop the cranks slipping on the splines, so shouldn't really need to be bollocked up tight - unless it started slipping ie knack...

Re: A petition worth signing
Actually I don't agree at all. Virtually every cycle farcility I've seen has been inconvenient or downright dangerous, at best merely useless. Given the track record of wasting extra money I'd rather it wasn't spent on cycling at all. Merely providing facilities make motorists resent us even more, e...

Re: Where to buy a bicycle?
although earlier posters have correctly stated you won't actually gain much over the galaxy (a rather fine bike) i am liking the n+1 bike excuse used by qnother poster. With this in mind how about a fixed-wheel bike? Against all reason I bought a rather nice (condor) fixie on the bike-to-work tax fi...
