Re: We are Cycling UK Into - What is your view

Thank gaz. Very odd. The one I had before is definitely different. I got it from Dennis Snape's Facebook group page. But I was looking at it on the PC, not the tabet I'm using now.

To be clearer, in the re-brand kit the new name plus strapline is printed several times in blue and yellow but the font is Times New Roman, not Cocon.

I note that the Cocon font is not used in the re-branding kit sent out to Member Groups. I wonder why?

Re: DEMAND FOR A POLL OF THE WHOLE CLUB

So it would seem that concerns were raised about going ahead with the name change with no mention of it to the membership, but it was not concerning enough for the Board to pause things and consult. Those councillors who originally agreed with investigating a change of name should be forgiven for not expecting the name change to be pushed through in the way it has been; with councillors being worn to secrecy about it.

So I thought I'd see out my commuted membership and see how it was all looking before deciding whether to renew. I decided it isn't looking good so did not renew. My adult daughter has joined British Cycling instead of renewing with CTC, but she does sportive and track cycling so that seemed right to her. Not sure what her brother and I will do but we need insurance so will do something. I'm not riding much at present so not in a hurry.

Assuming you have a household policy ... take a look at it and see if it includes TP cover ... mine does at pretty much the same deal as CTC/BC .. and no extra cost* (AND they insure my bikes at 5% - yes 5% - of the cost that CTC quoted for theft insurance ... and I don't need a specified "weighs more than the bike" lock) No brainer.

I just renewed my M & S policy. Bikes up to £1,000 value insured at no extra cost. We no longer have very valuable bikes so that's enough for us. I'll have a look at the third party cover offered. The legal cover offered by CTC to fight your side in court doesn't appear to be any different to any other No Win No Fee company now, unless I understand that wrong.

Re: It's all in the name - Cyclists' TOURING club

Well I did not renew when my membership was due on 1st November. The changes the board are trying to make to the number of member elected councillors was the last straw. Up until those proposals I was uncertain as to whether I would renew.

And for god's sake, don't make eye contact with anyone within half a mile of Canal Street.

I think that is an outdated view. I cycle the Ashton towpath fairly regularly, usually only from the City Centre as far as the Velodrome, but sometimes further afield, and the transformations along the canal side over recent years has been notable.

There was an item on the BBC North West news about the Canal and River Trust's campaign to encourage more narrowboats to visit Manchester (link).

Rick.

May not be too outdated a view. I know of several people who have been pushed off their bikes into the canal near Ashton. Also the bit from the National Cycling Centre to Debdale park had lots of rubbish on it last time I was there. Plus stretches of cobbles.

I'd say there are lots more. I did a search using my postcode and these were just two http://www.networkrail.co.uk/Transparency/LevelCrossingItemDetail.aspx?lcid=381&name=Dove%20Holes%20Foot%20Crossing&View=onList&postcode=SK2%207BB&radius=20

The Fridays was the one I was thinking of. Simon Legg is not running it now though, having done it for so long he's taking a break in 2015. The rides and the affiliation to CTC will continue though. My daughter Katie (aged 27) is a member of The Fridays and has done several of their rides. She is no longer a CTC member after being so since 2000 when she was 13. She didn't bother renewing in November last year.

All 3 of us at our house registered for a sportive via BC last year as it was the York Rally sportive in September which we wanted to support. Katie said at the time that she may join BC instead of renewing with CTC.

Si wrote:I think, John, that two different things are being discussed here:

1. you get the same benefits in your membership as everyone else but you pay according to your means (what you describe).

2. you choose the set of membership benefits that you can afford (or want) (like with the BC example that mjr quotes)

For the first option I'm still not sure how well it would go down, but am happy to be convinced of it's workability. For the second, we already have affiliate membership which offers the main things that the majority seem to want: 3rd party insurance and the ability to ride with MGs and Affiliate groups, at a reduced price.

Personally I'd rather that we had a free to join option for people who were brand new to cycling and thus didn't want to lay out a reasonable lump of cash until they knew that they could both do it and enjoyed it. It ought to include such features as free learn to ride sessions, free basic maintenance, and free very gentle led rides, etc. After all, it's in all our interests to get more people cycling. And as a charity that should be one of our basic aims should it not?

Si, with regard to the bit I've put in bold; we don't all have the option of affiliate membership. You can only have that if you belong to an affiliated club. Are you suggesting we just join one even if we don't live near one or want to ride with one? There isn't one near me but I know of at least one I could join with no intention of ever riding with. Maybe it's something to consider when my commuted membership approaches it's end?
