Re: Langthwaite to Booze gradient?

I hadn't heard of this place so googled it and found this: http://www.thenorthernecho.co.uk/news/3562647.A_bit_steep_as_Booze_receives_its_last_post/

I love Arkengarthdale, must go there again some time.

Re: So - is 'refresh the brand'

http://s902.photobucket.com/user/KarenSutton_photos/media/CTCshirt.jpg.html?sort=3&o=0

It seems the Winged Wheel and the name "Cyclists' Touring Club" have not been dumped by CTC. At the Birthday Rides this month CTC Holidays & Tours were selling yellow T shirts with a blue design on consisting of the Winged Wheel with "Cyclists Touring Club" underneath then the strapline "We were cycling before it was cool." Sadly I didn't get around to buying one in time but my son did. I asked if they would be available online but was told no. It seems they won't make an appearance until next year's Birthday Rides. It must be something they have produced just for "Cyclists' Touring Club" events, and perhaps the Birthday Rides is the only such event left?

Re: It's all in the name - Cyclists' TOURING club

It seems that when it went to a vote at the AGM the Winged Wheel lost.

Re: Will York Rally ever make a comeback?

Interestingly the entry for the Sportive is via British Cycling. One small step.....

Another thing to go this year is the Birthday Tea at the Birthday Rides.

No. Looks like it's consigned to the inside for the "foreseeable future"- Dan Joyce, editor of the magazine reassures Ted King on the letters page that it will be "in" Cycle for the foreseeable future. Note use of the word "in", not "on."

Re: Can't CTC do better than this?

The reference to lighter evenings doesn't work either. The preferred earlier dates including 5th August would give us lighter nights though. I think the last time the Birthday Rides actually coincided with the CTC anniversary was 2004. (Peak Rides), but am happy to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Re: Can't CTC do better than this?

I didn't get this wrong so not my research at fault.

I'll post a link to this thread to the Birthday Rides co-ordinator. If they were still using the actual CTC's birthday (5th August), which was actually the original reason for the Birthday Rides then that would be an improvement. The weather is often better in early August as well.

Re: Can't CTC do better than this?

If anyone is interested the CTC Birthday Rides this year I received the following message:

"We have reached agreement with Askham Bryan College near York to hold the 2014 Birthday Rides there.

The dates are Wed 13 August until Tuesday 19 August 2014 Being earlier than of late this will give us lighter evenings and better cater for Scottish Members with school age children.

Accommodation is all single with the majority being en-suite. Camping and Caravans will also be on the College grounds so once again we can put on an ‘inclusive’ event.

The area offers lots of different riding country and there are many places of interest so it should be possible to satisfy a wide range of wishes.

We still have lots to do before we release the Prospectus and Booking Forms, probably in early Feb."

Re: Can't CTC do better than this?

I don't think Mark will have made an official complaint. Perhaps he was trying to generate a debate? Time was that in days gone by that would definitely have happened. Perhaps most of the the touring stalwarts have become disillusioned as CTC thinks there aren't enough of us to be bothered about? Or maybe people aren't as interested in CTC events now?

Odd that Mark hasn't responded yet, he is usually quick to reply however he isn't on here as much these days; a bit like me really.

Re: Can't CTC do better than this?

I agree Mark. I know CTC has tried to reduce staff to bring down overheads but not having someone to at least remove out of date information is not acceptable. However it has always been thus. A new website is not going to change what happens, especially if there are fewer staff now.

I do know that at least one event could be updated even if with minimal details; the 2014 Birthday Rides date and venue has been decided so that could be updated even if there won't be any further information until February.

There isn't a problem if you want them. But I think that if you unsubscribe from them then they should not send them to you.

Re: Incredible

My membership is not due but a few weeks ago I started receiving "Club Shorts" which is a newsletter for CTC groups. I unsubscribed from all emails from CTc over a year ago so getting this was a surprise. I logged in and unsubscribed again. But this week it turned up in my inbox again. This time I marked it as Spam and hopefully it will be identified as such in future by my email programme.
