Re: Train fares
Using eastcoast you can book your bike space with your tickets. I always use them.

I was told by NO that if you have a membership number you can ride with a Member Group. Affiliated members have membership numbers.

Re: The most climb for the least miles!
Coming back to this, my daughter and I went for a little ride yesterday which was a bit lumpy.
She says: "MapMyRide only recognises two of the climbs but here's our ride from yesterday. The device used to plot the route says a gain of 3008.5 feet over 22.09 miles. (The extra six inches is obviously crucial when you're crunching these kind of numbers.)"

Well I've got a photograph of my Mum on the bike and it definitely has bar end shifters on. (They were Campag ones I believe)

Shimano SL-BS50 was the official 7 speed index bar-end shifter, all Shimano rear bar-end shifters have a friction option.
Hi,
Ebay £38 new , they are sold as 7/8 speed but their not 8S unless it says "8S" on the lever.
The R /H will not work on 8S unless you can get by with bottom with out an index, risky when standing.
I'm not into standing when cycling. This bike would not be used for long hilly rides so I can probably manage with the 14 gears on it at present.

The STIs could well just be gummed up, its worth giving them a blast with WD40 or whatever
The STIs may work OK with a bit of TLC; but I don't like them and prefer friction shifters. (My tourer has down tube shifters but as this bike originally had bar end shifters I would like to put those on if possible).

Restoring an old bike. Need bar end shifters
My Mum's vintage (1950) Holdsworth has come back into my possession after my Dad has used it for several years. I rode it in my youth and think I'd like to ride it again. However my Dad "modernised" it and I'd like to change some features back again.
It has Shimano RSX STI levers on it, which only partially work. Last time I rode it it had downtube shifters but originally had bar end shifters. It has a double chainset (40/52) and a 7 speed block. Does anyone know if it's possible to find bar end shifters for that set up? I'm not sure if it could be changed to a triple chainset or a bigger block.
Thanks for reading.
Karen

Re: Where are all the events?
i may be wrong but didn't Bob Kynaston used to do the events listings? I know our MG used to send events to be added to him.
As Bob died recently it is possible this is why things aren't being updated.
Of course it is a CTC tradition for stuff like this to be sidelined and for there to be no resources or staff to take on someone else's former tasks.

As a former employee of a large telecommunications company, I've got an idea where the accommodation will be.
And I certainly won't be attending.
Is there something we should know?

Re: Bakers cycsts/Crank length
I had an arthroscopy with synovectomy on my right knee as this removes some of the lining of the joint which produces synovial fluid. This meant I had less synovial fluid, which was the major cause of the swelling. I still have to occasionally have some fluid drawn off but the mobility of the knee joint is much improved. however it probably would help to have shorter cranks so you don't have to bend your knee so much when pedalling.

Re: Blackburn FL1 lo-rider rack
Thanks everyone for all the info. A good friend has managed to fit my old 1970s front pannier on my bike. so I can use my old 1970s front panniers.
If anyone wants a Blackburn FL1 lo -rider rack they can have it for the cost of posting it.
Cheers

Re: Blackburn FL1 lo-rider rack
The main prroblem I have is not trying to get panniers I already own to fit this rack, it's buying some which will fit. it looks like there won't be any so I'll probably just have to get a new rack and panniers to fit it.
Thanks everyone,.
Thanks everyone,.

Re: Blackburn FL1 lo-rider rack
Thanks gaz. The one on the right in your last picture is the C system clip, with the red safety catch.
Disregarding carradice panniers with C system hooks, I wonder if there are any panniers at all which will fit the FL1 lowrider without modifying it? It would seem not as the horizontal plate will probably stop any fixing system attaching properly. It seems odd that so many retailers are still selling this rack if there are no panniers on sale which will fit onto it. I have to admit I've had this rack for ten years and haven't tried to use it until now.

Re: Blackburn FL1 lo-rider rack
Hmm. It's starting to look like I'll have to replace the rack if I can't modify it, which I probably can't. I do have an old fashioned rack which I used to use with my very old carradice cotton duck panniers (the type which are attached together at the top with bands and throw over the rack). I've put the rack on the bike but it fouls the mudguard so it is rubbing on the wheel. That's why I thought of using the low rider, but don't have panniers to fit it.
