Re: 519 miles in one go?
France, country roads, night time, no traffic lights. In the absence of traffic and signals to obey it's easy to keep pedalling.

Re: Charging Devices Whilst Touring - Options??
I'd consider a Luxos U light which has built in USB for charging as well for a cleaner simpler setup.

Re: Does Tubeless tyres have a place on road bikes?
Think of the ride from your best racing tyres then combine that with the puncture protection of marathon pluses. Tubeless is great, 20,000 miles no punctures and sublime riding. Road coming up to 2 years, all year round riding. My MTB tubeless are 9 years with one puncture when log got wedged in bike.

A loose surface can make a climb difficult as can one where you can see the top from a long way away.

Re: Carrying a helmet with you
It's always based on perceived risk.
If you wore a helmet based on the evidence of a head injury you'd wear on for driving, walking, taking a shower etc. It may be that they are on a tour with a mix of hilly and flat riding and they like to wear helmet on fast downhills but don't bother on flat / undulating terrain where the risks are minuscule

Re: Winter glove advice
The best insulator is the air itself. That is why, when referring to down you talk about loft. So make sure your winter gloves are not too snug on your fingers / hand. I am using some wind stopper fleece gloves that don't squeeze my fingers. Good to -5c so far. Silk liners and ski gloves work well if it gets below -10c.

Re: High low flashing front LED light
It's my view that to flash the light must be off for a period, even if only for a nano second. What you are describing is a light that pulses aka pulsar. My off road exposure light does that, it doesn't flash as it is never off, it just cycles the power output.
