Re: E petition surfacing redressing

Got me thinking readin this. There is a constant plethora of roadworks around here. I can't remember ever seeing a steamroller. Yea I know they aren't steam anymore [mores the pity]. I may have seen one of those tiny hand roller things but not the proper jobbie. Does the real thing exist any more o...

Re: Wearing earphones

However have you actually ever tried riding with a walkman on? Do you ever wear a walkman? Perceptive questions, in order, no, but you probably realise this from my stance on the subject and rarely. I'm one of the people who regard music as just another aspect of life, to be taken in moderation, no...

Re: Wearing earphones

I'm afraid I think "halfway to membership of the Darwin club" is nonsense. In my experience by the time you're aware something is wrong it's pretty much going to be too late - either that or you're going to spend most of your time pre-emptively jumping into bushes or swerving out of the w...

Re: Wearing earphones

As for the 'well I've got music in the car' argument, my car is so isolated from the outside world that mirrors are essential, as is using them, I rarely hear any other traffic. So rather than relying on hearing you are relying on observation. Seems to work perfectly fine for you. A bicycle is not ...

Re: Wearing earphones

Wind the clock back 70 years and pretty much the only music available was live music. Nowadays anyone who questions the use of personal entertainment systems in any scenario is regarded as odd and out of step, but frankly to remove one sense and then go out into a world full of hazards is asking for...

Re: E petition surfacing redressing

I would ask that surface dressing is done properly. There's a lot that isn't but in the last few weeks I've come across numerous resurfaced roads here in Shropshire that have been noticeably better in quality. There's been a distinct lack of excess chippings and those that have been laid are even. ...

Re: American looking for touring partner/s in UK or just adv

Hi Matt, With limited time and a desire to see some good bits, I'd go for an off-the-shelf route and presuming London would be the start point, then Wales offers a short end-to-end that could take in Stonehenge as an easy add-on. On and off-road routes can be found on this site http://www.sustrans.o...

Re: A Plea for BRIGHT Clothing

I must admit I haven't been on the forum for awhile and browsing this one I was truly astonished at the first page of frankly <moderated> who put all the blame on drivers and trashed the OPs quite reasonable argument for high-vis clothing. Rather than read more of the same, apologies to any who disp...

Re: When is close too close?

A road like that deserves to have some sort of cycle facility, it's just a matter of time before somebody gets their judgement wrong and you suffer. I'd lay odds the person getting it wrong will be driving a bus, they are the worst for sure, probably because they are forced to drive ambitiously by a...

Re: Top Gear on bikes

You haven't seen Breaking Bad? You really are out of the loop... Netflix. You could get a month for free, sign up watch it then cancel. For some reason none of the UK networks signed it up even though it's been one of the best things on TV. Not so much out of the loop as a bit mea... er care...

Re: Top Gear on bikes

The thing about TG is the grain of truth that runs through nearly all the pieces they do. Living in a rural town I notice the drivers are either very polite and respectful [apart from the odd one or two driven by yoof wearing IQ reducers] or downright competitive. The worst are nearly all bus driver...

No prosecution because there is no evidence that they are breaking the law.

Why? There is no indication that they were moving when they took the picture, simple.

Re: Homicidal driver.. in Lancs

A few years back I was on a quiet main road, red Golf approaching veered across to my side of the road, I kept watching the driver, he clearly thought it was great laugh, I didn't... fortunately he left enough room for me to stay on the road, what a tosser!

Re: Cycling Safety - What Needs To Change?

Cyclists will always be vulnerable and people differ in what makes them feel safe, my own ideal starts with self-help, it's my life after all. - I wear something bright whenever possible, drivers are on autopilot for a frightening proportion of their journey, I want them to register my presence. - D...

Re: do flashing lights help drivers see you?

Hi all, I ride with high vis, reflectors, and bright lights. I have two 300+ lumen front lights, so I thought that this would be enough for drivers to see me. Obviously not. At a roundabout this am and the previous friday (around 07.15), i have had cars on my left fail to stop, when I am on the rou...
