Re: Cyclist blamed in cyclist-pedestrian collision

When I was learning to drive the instructor once said "if the night is pitch black and the street-lights are off and you hit a blind drunk pedestrian dressed in black who staggers out backwards from between two parked vans, you're liable".

Re: What the heck is this tool for ........ cleaning

As it happens, I worked out exactly what these things are for the other week, and it had nothing to do with cassettes.

Trouble is, I've forgotten. Sic transit Gloria Vanderbilt etc

Re: Notre Dame....

#TouchePasANotreDame! Should it be restored as it was? Or is this a chance to modernise and improve, it could be rebuilt even high€r The majority want the spire to look the way it did before so the Macrobe will obviously ignore them and plump for a sky-blue pink titanium one. "They'll thank me...

Re: Notre Dame....

They are there to provide plot material for novelists with low, conspiracy-mongering minds (see under Dan Brown ). Aha - that's an author whose output has escaped me - for now and hopefully for evermore! Kate Mosse (not to be confused with Kate Moss) , on the other hand, does quite a dece...

Re: Advance Australia Fair

I rather like Tie me kangaroo down, sport! although mainly as a way of irritating people. The problem now, perhaps is that Jake the Peg's extra leg was all too real. Shame nobody walked on it. ---o0o--- IIRC, while AAF was to be used for the pomp & circumstance, Waltzing Matilda was to be used ...

Re: Homeopathy, does it work?

I reckon its main advantage is that whereas people know placebos do nothing, homeopathy is backed by a great body of misconceptions and downright lies.

Re: Homeopathy, does it work?

Our first Leonberg nearly died of an ear infection because a raving homeopath of a vet 'treated' her. The unscrupulous butt-weevil was actually a judge of Leonbergs at national show level, not that we wanted to do that to the poor dog but it was a great line in the CV. We didn't know anything about ...

Re: Les 'gilets jaunes'

In fact the blanket 80 kph limit is not being lifted overall, but our weasels-in-office plan to let the Prefects of every département decide which from roads it will be lifted, which means that as you drive from one département to another the limit is probably going to change. It's a right dog's bre...

Re: D-Day

I guess my point is there's no easy way through a world war like that and there's so many ways to lose your life. It isn't the dday veterans alone we should thank but the whole generation that served in whatever way they could. Perhaps we need more recognition through mass commemoration events of o...

Re: English Language - what "Does your head in" ??

Yes Mick, that’s right as far as I’m aware. I do know that spelled is an acceptable alternative. A number of English verbs have alternative past participles, both equally correct. "Dreamed" and "dreamt" is another example. There's probably a regional bias, each form being inheri...
