Re: Measuring a seat post

Good question and I don't have a definitive answer, but it is safest to assume that the length is from the centre of the saddle rail to the bottom of the post. So you need to allow for the fact that about 10cm of this will be inside the frame.

Re: Female Cyclist Death In North London

I am first and foremost a cyclist, but I am also a white van driver. And I am sure that somewhere out there is a keen cyclist who is also a tipper truck driver. Let's not descend into tribalism here. Bad, dangerous use of our roads should be condemned, but we should not lash out at people simply because of their mode of travel. After all, aren't we cyclists victims of that sort of misplaced anger sometimes?

MartinC's spec is very close to the weight target when you allow for guards, etc. It also sounds like a nice bike with no silly compromises.

Re: Steve abraham attempt

Everybody's different. I wouldn't want to do what Steve is trying to do (even if I could) but if he wants to do it I wish him well. It has no practical value, but he knows that. It's not great for your life beyond cycling, but I expect he knows that too. He has made a choice that is right for him, and it allows the rest of us to marvel at an extreme effort that most of us could not contemplate. Life would be a bit less interesting without people like him.

Yes, poor light conditions with the sun low in the sky, but mild weather leading to people riding in large numbers. That might help to produce a spike in the figures.

Re: UKIP - get off road, cycle on pavement

What I meant was that any popularity UKIP may have is because of one issue. The positive aspect of this is that there is no reason to think that their other views have any popularity.

Re: 13 deaths in January, heading for worst in over 10 yrs

I don't think these statistics tell us enough to draw any conclusions about trends. Weather could be playing a big part.

I also wonder whether the rise in numbers of cyclists in London and the other big conurbations means that urban cycling is a bigger part of the picture than it once was. Cycling in a city (at least in the UK) is more risky than cycling in the countryside, and it seems to me that this is the side of cycling that is growing fastest. I live in a rural area and my impression is that things have improved over the past decade. Car drivers are passing wider, and it is a long time since I last had any verbal abuse from another road user.

Re: UKIP - get off road, cycle on pavement

On a positive note, I think people who vote UKIP do so only because of concerns about the EU and high levels of immigration, and not because of all the other stuff that UKIP candidates spout off about. This rubbish gets good press coverage because it is funny.

Re: UKIP - get off road, cycle on pavement

Don't let it wind you up. It's somebody who is against everything that he doesn't do himself. Given half a chance he will probably offend practically everybody eventually. UKIP will be trying to put some distance between themselves and this crank.

Re: Female Cyclist Death In North London

I read the report looking for clues for what went wrong and, frankly, we don't have enough information to apportion blame at this time. If the lorry was overtaking when the collision happened, then I would be tending towards blaming the driver. If the cyclist was overtaking on the inside and there was no cycle lane I would suspect an unwise bit of cycling. There are various things that may have happened here. We just don't know.

I'm just glad I don't have to cycle in a busy city, and I wish those of you who do a long and healthy life. Things are far from ideal out there, but over time the fact that people continue to ride in London and other built-up areas means that the needs of cyclists are creeping up the agenda.

You know you have been winter cycling when you get to Spring and find that you are faster than the people who put their bikes away for the winter!

Re: Rear wheel punctures

It may seem a bit too obvious, but is it simply a sharp edge on the valve hole damaging the tube? But I suppose you would have noticed if it had been anything so simple.

Re: chain rings for 8 speed triple ( chain ) RSX

The Spa rings (all brands) will work with 8 speed. It's only when you get to the narrower chains (eg 11 speed) that you need to be careful.

Re: Thorn Audax Home build

Is that Di2 stuff reliable in the rain? I've noticed a lot of bike changes due to gear problems on televised road races since that electronic stuff came out, and it may be my luddite nature but I wonder if the old fashioned cable gears are still a better bet for most of us.
