Must comment, as I've had good service from City Link, Southampton & Guildford depots.

Re: IS IT CORRECT THAT: Money
I was not for charity status.
It would seem my fears have just been justified, if the OP's comments are true.

Re: How many of your gears do you actually use regularly?
Late into this, but I tend to ride mainly in a gear of approx. 56", casually.
The rest come into play when I have to go uphill; Bottom of 36"".
So; probably, about 3, unless I'm going uphill.

Re: Can anyone tell me anything about the Moulton FX8
Have had one for years.
Mine has a SpeedDrive fitted in the bottom bracket. This makes it rather heavy, but increases the ratios, (it was all the rage at the time).
I first used it for touring/day rides of up to around 90 miles, just as was, with the 8spd.
Then it became my off road hack for several years; & it still survives to this day.
You should be able to fit a front changer, if you can find one. It requires a bolt on type.
My last outing on it was a charity ride this year. A bit sluggish, or was that just me......
Hope this is of use to you.
