Re: Winter tyres

best to run them in at low pressures whilst running in then high pressures afterwards if it's not icy to keep the studs on the sides mainly off the road.

Re: Tyres for ice

schwalbe winter marathons run at low pressure. slow & heavy but do grip on frost and ice.

would recommend buying sooner rather than later as stock seems to run out quickly

Re: chain tension changing as turn crank

had some stronglight rings 86 bcd running as fixed. not so good for concentricity so bit the bullet a few years ago and bought an egg ring from highpath. smooth to say the least!
just hoping my stronglight crank doesn't break now as there don't seem to be many with that bcd available anymore.

Re: How long before disc brakes are standard on road bikes?

does heat build up affect other cycle components through regular or extreme use? regular brake blocks? tyres? wheel bearings? how hot does a spoke get attached to a rim subjected to heavy braking?

just wondered!

Re: Fixed or single speed for commuting.

was it matt seaton who wrote that riding with a fixed gear makes the rider take a "more anticipatory" approach? i find that to be hugely true. as for the safety angle i find the ability to slow down quickly without skidding a great benefit especially in the wet. also i like the ability to ...

Re: Gear Cable fatigue failures in STIs/Ergos

...I'm willing to bet that I do well in excess of anyone in the amount of gear changes I do - both front and rear. I rarely remain in the same gear for more than a few minutes... I wonder; my chum's estimate was, frankly, unbelieveable to me. But then I took notice of what he was actually doing as ...

Re: How long before disc brakes are standard on road bikes?

how will the age old design of a nice lightweight road wheel withstand the different torsional effects of a disc?

plonk in a 28 spoke radial and you're asking for trouble right?

Re: How long before disc brakes are standard on road bikes?

are the newer road bike disc brakes different in terms of 'grab' to a MTB? i.e deliberately less as a front road tyre & fork isn't going to be able to 'take the welly'..? (even though the forks are made to be more stiff.) i'm all for progress in bike technology but not sure there's that big a pr...
