Re: Clinchers: steel bead v folding
i can honestly say i'd not notice an ounce of difference caused by the beads on tyres everything else being equal.

Re: Commuting
have commuted by bike for nearly 20 years now but haven't noticed a serious rise in nutters recently. ride in maximum defensive mode planning to do every driver's thinking for them. i have always thought though that the more a rider can keep pace with the traffic the safer they are with far fewer vehicles passing and those when 'allowed' or invited by the rider.
i have noticed however (since the tour/olympics) far more people cycling somewhere in the morning. hopefully this increase of (most likely) inexperienced commuters hasn't increased the accident statistics markedly.

Re: spoke calculators
spoke hole diameter is 33mm
flanges are 35mm from centre.
chrina or sputnik - can use either.
i'm a long time customer of spa but i'm not sure that they are familiar with hope hubs (apologies if i'm selling you short here mr 531 colin and current staff.) got some spokes here - just looking to get the right ones if i don't have stock of the right ones when buying the rim from spa.
any help appreciated!

totally agree. still haven't quite figured out how he pedals the thing though!might get awfully messy in there if it's wet too but he'd be unfortunate if it was in that area!
hope he does it!

Re: Spokes
what's the likeliest cause of 2 rear NDS spokes constantly going slack in an otherwise 'straight' wheel? however much this is re-tensioned, stressed, re-trued etc a pair of spokes go slack within say 3 weeks. wheel is on the 'light' end of the scale rim wise but not ridiculously so.
flat spot on rim?

Re: reprints from film negatives
thanks for the replies.
i have been looking for a proper photography shop but they seem all to be victims of the digital camera age alas. i have had the megative scanned by a friend who has a quality negative scanner but the result is a little 'cartoon like' so i'd like to try a print directly from the negative.
looks like i'll have to hunt out the nearest jessops to manchester. the one i remember is no longer there methinks...

Re: Shimmy -- caused by play in hub?
only had shimmy once on a columbus max steel framed bike with deep rimmed alu wheels(so plenty of inherent stiffness) and yes it was picking up speed on a rapid downhill. only happened the once even after riding the same set up over the same roads many further times.
very disconcerting though!
