Fashride Wed 22 Feb - London The Mall at 6.15

A flashride to encourage MPs to attend the debate on the issue of making our cities safe for cycling. Starts at the Mall at 6.15. It will have police support and marshalls, apparently.

http://cyclelondoncity.blogspot.com/201 ... y-615.html

I have to say after my less-than-lovely experience cycling to and from a meeting in the City at rush hour yesterday, away from my normal route, I'm especially inclined to cancel my normal Weds night commitment and attend.

New TfL figures show cycling not getting safer
FROM Jenny Jones London Assembly Green Party Member
News Release
Thursday 2nd February 2012

New TfL figures show cycling not getting safer

Newly published official figures show that whilst cycling in London is safer than it was in 2000, the trend has reversed since around 2007/08. The annual casualty figures where already known, but the Travel in London report has now issued revised figures for the number of cycle journey stages per day, broken down by each year since 2000.

The Mayor recently told Jenny Jones at Mayor's Questions, it was

“your duty as an honest politician to tell people the truth that cycling is actually getting safer, when you consider the number of people on the roads”.

The Mayor’s adviser wrote to Jenny before Christmas stating incorrectly that there had been:

“…a reduced number of cycling collisions in the last ten years.”

Jenny Jones has responded:

“We know that cycle safety is the big problem which puts Londoners off jumping on their bikes. There are a growing number of deaths and injuries of cyclists and trying to cover that up by issuing factually inaccurate statements won’t change the reality. My calculation, based upon the TfL’s figures is that the rate of injuries per cycle journey has been growing since around 2007/08. The truth is uncomfortable for all of us who want London to be a cycling friendly city. The Mayor has failed to make roads safer for vulnerable road users and he is fast becoming the big barrier to the future expansion of cycling in London.”

“We urgently need to fix the most dangerous junctions and reverse the Mayor’s policy of giving priority to motorised traffic. The Mayor needs to stand his policy on its head and give legal priority on many local roads to pedestrians and cyclists. I will be raising these concerns during the consultation on the Mayor's draft Road Safety Strategy.”

Calling London Cyclists - ROYAL PARKS AT NIGHT/WHEN CLOSED.

ROYAL PARKS AT NIGHT/WHEN CLOSED.

http://www.royalparks.gov.uk/

Met Police that covers the Royal Parks has asked me to pass on the following pointers.

Take care in the parks after dark; there has been spate of robberies

In addition, I know it sounds daft, if the Royal Park is closed do not climb over the gate to gain entry.

This has occurred in the recent past when a lone female was asked what she was doing in the park when closed , she said this nice man (who she did not know) help me to lift her bike over the gate to gain entry.

Re: LCC ?

As a lone nutter in Westminster, I also attend and work with LCC Westminster; the numbers that turn up is about six in total if we are lucky. That is not unusual; Kensington and Chelsea sometime only two turn up. Not all LCC groups are all powerful.

LCC Camden has 600 members, when ask how many do anything, I was told 10 regularly, with another 10 can be called upon.

Many outer London LCC groups are not very strong and some have been criticized by local cyclist for being bunch of old men going on cycle rides together.

I do agreed that the LCC has higher media profile , but CTC recently had one but its media officer is no longer full time, we need a media presence and support for its R2R.

LCC ?

Simon

Are you saying that the CTC Right to Ride Representative (as listed below) are not doing a good job with the limited resources offer by the CTC headquarter?

Alternatively, are you saying that the CTC could do much better if the CTC supported them as suggested by John Meudell in his R2R development plan?

You can see that the R2R network in London has large gaps, of course some LCC Boroughs Co-Coordinator are in fact CTC members, if the cycling lobby is to be more efficient and effective we need all local authorities in London and else where to be coved by a CTC R2R representative working in conjunction with the local campaign groups.

As been stated elsewhere, the CTC is Cyclists’ Touring Club, but it was set to bring like minded people together, this was done against some opposition due to the independent mindedness of cyclist. One of it aims was to campaign for better roads , see Calton Reid eBook to be publish soon on this subject.

There is a suspicion among some that CTC HQ is uneasy of it campaigning member and does not trust them. Trust will build trust, the process of policy development need to be two way process, IMHO the CTC HQ should not tell use what the policy is, we should bring us into the process, and please do not repeat the origins of this process, time as moved on. We need to use some of the method of the LCC and ask our very well informed and illtellergent R2R members and others to give input in policy development.

Can anybody out there HELP with the gaps in the CTC NETWORK?

If yes contact

GLA MOTION ON CYCLE SAFETY REVIEW FALLS AS CONSERVATIVE ASSEMBLY MEMBERS WALK OUT.
The following motion on cycle safety was not taken today, as Conservative assembly members and one independent assembly member, left the meeting inquorate.

“This Assembly deeply regrets the deaths of cyclists on London's road network and wishes to express its condolences for the loss felt by their relatives and friends. We are concerned that some cyclist deaths and injuries could have been avoided if the road network designs for the locations where these deaths and injuries occurred had been safer. We therefore call on the Mayor and Transport for London to:
• produce a list of the ten most dangerous locations for cyclists on the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) and all locations in London where a cyclist has died in the last three years;
• report on any proposals that were put forward by cycling and road safety groups as part of official consultation processes for redesigning roads at those locations; and provide the reasons why any such proposals were rejected.”
Jenny Jones said:
"The Tory walkout before we could take the cycling motion was perhaps partly based on embarrassment at the Mayor's poor safety record. He has consistently ignored cycling campaigners' advice on how to make junctions safe, leaving cyclists vulnerable to the faster traffic. This is playing with people's lives, not delivering good government for London."
