Re: Anyone taken their bicycle on the portsmouth-bilbao ferry?

Forgot to say in my previous post that I did sail back from Bilbao in 2011 after a serious crash and as far as I can remember I just booked on line as normal then so I was surprised with the response in 2015.

Re: Anyone taken their bicycle on the portsmouth-bilbao ferry?

That's interesting. I tried to book for a return journey from Bilbao in 2015. As you say found I couldn't book on line so rang and was refused as apparently the captain "doesn't like bicycles". My son and I therefore had to cycle back to Santander and sail back from there. Pleased to see b...

Re: Jeremny Vine a road rage victim

If you have seen them fair enough but to me they seem a genuine attempt to show what cyclists have to put up with. Clickbait seems a bit harsh.

Re: Jeremny Vine a road rage victim

In his defence he often posts on Twitter videos of incidents on his way to the studios. This is by far the worst but I do not think this has been posted merely for the publicity. He is a regular cyclist and I often wonder why he posts the clips as all you get is a subsequent Twitter blizzard between...

Re: Touring out of Santander to Rioja (Logorno)

Didn't quite get as far as Logrono in 2014. Just got off the ferry and booked accomodation a night in advance using Booking.com. Other websites are available. It was July/August though not October. The route I ended up doing with my youngest son is given below. Day 1 Santander to Vega de Pas 58k 123...

Re: Tavistock Torrington Place cycle route trial (Camden)

I'm afraid I have to agree. They are indeed a real trip hazard. I use that road usually two or three times a week and did in fact trip myself when they were first introduced. I think the problem is that when crossing the road you look for traffic and cycles but don't usually look where you are putti...

In the event I was unwell and unable to go anyway but thanks for all the suggestions. I shall certainly consider them next time.

Re: Increasing restrictions on conveying cycles on trains

I think you may be making life harder for yourself then it needs to be. I've always booked tickets and bike spaces in one operation on the First Great Western website. I don't think I've bought tickets from the rebranded site (gwr.com) but I'm assuming that the basic system is still the same . I wo...

Re: Increasing restrictions on conveying cycles on trains

The problem I find is booking the best price ticket via the trainline and then finding there are no bike spaces available. I intended to take the bike from Winchester to Castle Cary and then cycle to Glastonbury. On enquiring I found there was no space on my intended train and the price of the ticke...

Indeed and I usually have two small butane canisters with me but this particular trip didn't. Might also be an issue in the future though.

Re: Brittany Ferries security

It has been standard on airlines for many years although some might say it hasn't always worked. I had a penknife confiscated at Heathrow and handed back to me in a prominent hazards bag in Amsterdam. Consequently security in Amsterdam immediately wanted to search my luggage. This would have been fi...

Re: Brittany Ferries security

Thanks for the responses.

Looks like I should be alright next June then.

As I said security was certainly much tighter this year than in any previous year in which I travelled. I suppose sadly it is a sign of the times that they are now more concerned with weapons than smuggled goods.

Brittany Ferries security

On the last couple of trips from Portsmouth I have noticed a sharp increase in security. Mirrors looking under cars and luggage searches, that sort of thing. I don't have a problem with this. However on the last trip both my son and I and a pannier each were searched via an airport type scanner. Whe...

Nope, road tax doesn't exist - hasn't done since Churchill abolished it. It will do again soon. Deep joy. Osborne has now announced that from 2017, emissions tax will be scrapped and replaced with a “road fund”. Read more at http://totalwomenscycling.com/news/why-reintroducing-road-tax-could-put-cy...

Ah I now see you are cutting across the peninsular unlike my son and I who went round the coast so our route is probably out of your way.
