One thing I forgot in my previous post...
With a newer USB C android phone, you may need to enable data sharing as some, if not all, default to charging mode (part of the USB C spec is to allow charging of one device from another). My Edges (605, 1000 & 1030 Plus) always show up just as an SD card in an OTG connected card reader would.
Other Garmin devices may act differently. If the Garmin won't mount then a simple card reader &. OTG adapter will save you having to swap out any card in the phone.
Just remember to unmount the device or card reader before physically disconnecting it from your phone, as Android can be a bit fussy about just pulling out the wire.

Re: How to get GPX files onto an Garmin Etrex while out touring
It is possible to connect your phone & Garmin together using an OTG (on the go) adapter, that has a connector for your phone on one side & a rectangular USB A connector at the other*. I used to do that occasionally to copy GPX/TCX file across as far back as at least 2015 with a Garmin Edge 605 & whatever android phone I had at the time (probably a Sony Xperia).
The only limitation I found was that any SD card in the Garmin wasn't visible so you had to copy the file into the relevant folder (Garmin/GPX, Garmin/TCX or, in the case of newer Garmin's at least in the Edge range, Garmin/Newfiles where the unit will deal with whatever format the file is automatically), in the internal memory.
(*The last couple of new phones I've unboxed - my Google pixel 6a & a friend's Samsung - both with USB C connectors - came with an adapter included. In the past I've bought adapters a couple of times but they've cost less than £5.)

Re: Garmin Explore 2
With the 1030 Plus, and newer, if you go off route it will default to calculating a "best route to get back on track". But it has the options to take you back to the route where you left it (which may be important in some situations) or give up & just calculate a route direct to the end. You can also pause navigation so it doesn't try to reroute at all, but will pick up navigating automatically when you return to the route (or you can un-pause so it will recalculate & give you a route back ont track). Recalculation is also fast enough to be useful.
As an aside:- I remember trying to use navigation on my first Garmin, an Edge 605. If you missed a turn in an urban area and it tried to recalculate but, by the time it had finished, you had probably passed the recalculated turn so it would start recalculating again... You needed to stop & wait for recalculation to finish (or turn recalculation off & navigate back to the route manually). I rarely used the 605 to devise a route & left recalculation turned off.

Check your navigation settings under Activity Profiles (they are set independently for each profile).Manc33 wrote: ↑23 Jun 2023, 6:56am After updating maps on my 1030 Plus (updated 2 days ago) it's still suggesting taking routes through places like this![]()
Zig-zagging through housing estates and going across fields. I don't care that a tarmac path might run though it, I'm never going to ride through a place like that on my own bike rides. I wish there was some way to tell it to stick to main roads.
If a bike path runs around a football pitch, it will send you there. Now imagine this not on a 10 mile round trip but a 40 or 50 mile ride, it's unworkable!
Looking an idiot is the least of my worries.![]()
Before updating my last GARMIN (to D6017100A.img and D6016100A.img) I was running some 2017 or 2018 map (in 2023) and that sent me literally to cycle around the back of someone's garden, with signs on the grass saying no bikes etc, styles/stiles (whatever they are called) where the bike has to be lifted over.
Under Routing there are a whole load of options. Note that "Lock on Road" may not be a very useful one, unless it has changed since I last used it (which was probably on my old Edge 605).

Ray doesn't tend to pull the punches if something is bad - but he seems mostly positive about the Explore 2.

Re: Disc brakes, not working
Are the brakes & levers compatible? Road pull levers & mountainbike pull callipers will never work satisfactorily (at least not with out a cable pull widget in the system).
Is there enough pad material left? Pads usually start with about 2mm thickness of the friction material & should be replaced when there is about 1mm left.
Are the pads adjusted right. Many cable discs need clearance adjusting using the pad adjusters & only use any cable adjustment just to take up slack when the calliper arm is resting against its stop.
In the absence of specific instructions, I would make sure the calliper's slot is centrally over the rotor (maybe a little offset to give more space on the side with the fixed pad). Adjust the pads so that they are against the rotor without bending it as you adjust them in, then back of both pads just enough for them not to catch the rotor. Finally, slacken the bolts fixing the calliper on so that they can move sideways, hold the brake hard on & retighten the bolts to make sure the calliper is aligned with the rotor.

Important to note that they are investigating whether there was gross misconduct, & have informed the officers that this is the case, rather than notifying them that they have been found to have acted in such a manner.Jdsk wrote: ↑13 Jun 2023, 3:26pm Two gross misconduct notices issued to police officers in the van:

Another thing that I don't think has been commented on is that doorbell footage can often appear speeded up as it is recorded at a low frame rate (I don't know if that is universal or just with some setups). I found this out from discussion elsewhere about completely unrelated events. The motorcycle and the police van may actually have been travelling at much lower speed than it seemed from the footage that circulated early on in media coverage.

Re: Anyone Else 'Lost' Their Rail Pass on Railcard App?
I've found there is sometimes (often?) a delay in new railcards appearing. I seem to recall that there may even be something on the website saying up to (possibly) 2 or 3 days (I've not tried looking yet).

Re: Anyone Else 'Lost' Their Rail Pass on Railcard App?
Mrs H said yesterday that she had a message about her railcard app being out of date & her cards had disappeared. I shan't mess around for now, now that I know it isn't just her phone (I was thinking of uninstalling the app, unregistering the cards from her phone & then setting it all up again. My has been working fine today, although no-one actually asked to see my railcard when they checked my ticket.
Fortunately I have a copy of her "senior" card on my phone (if we are travelling together - she rarely travels by train on her own - & have digital tickets then I usually have them on my phone so it is as easy to have the railcards accessible on the same device). We also have a "Friends & family" card, mainly for taking grandchildren out, & my copy is (so far) working fine.

"Planet X appears set to appoint administrators"
According to an article in Cycling Weekly (The link popped up in my Facebook feed just now)
"British bike company Planet X appears set to go into administration, according to documents filed at Companies House and at the High Court this week.
A notice of intention to appoint an administrator was filed on 1 June at the High Court."

I've had a subscription for Outdoor Map Navigator from Anquet (https://www.anquet.com/) "Four Apps - One Subscription".
I use it on Windows PC & Android phone & you can sync data between them. Maps are downloadable fro offline use & updated quarterly.

Re: New Proposed Sleeper Service
My backup plan on UK trains where your bike has to be released (I use Avanti pendelinos fairly regularly) is to go and stand in the doorway nearest the bike storage so that the door can't be closed until someone has come to release my bike.
I also always go & speak to the train manager as soon as I've got on the train to say where I'm getting off with my bike &, on longer runs, will go & speak to them again after the train has left the previous station &/or is getting close to my destination stop. Staff can forget & sometime there are crew changes (I know that on the West Coast Main Line they often change crew at Preston).

Re: Cycle Travel Question
A very minor feature request.
Would it be possible to be able to clear/delete a route when you've only defined the start.
When using a touch screen (or even an overly sensitive track pad) it is all too easy to mis-drag and register a tap on the map instead, starting a route somewhere random. It isn't that much hassle to tap another (random) point nearby then tap the X button to clear it. But it would be nicer if I could just tap the X without the intermediate step.
Thanks

My severely sight impaired friend didn't seem to have any problem. I scanned/photographed (can't remember which now) the relevant piece of paper & it was uploaded with the online application. The main eligiblity requirements seem to be one, or both, of the followinggbnz wrote: ↑24 May 2023, 6:16pmHow easy did you find it to actually get a Disabled Railcard? I've been eligible since 2018, but in the two years I've tried, have found it impossible. Can take several months to try and get a necessary response from some remote Department of the NHS, DVLA or whatever, but the Disabled Railcard application will always be rejected; because it's in a PDF format, or states last weeks date on the letter etc, etcTezzerthebikerider wrote: ↑10 Jan 2023, 6:57pm It was online but spoke to " chat " and its been sorted .Its 165 each way , now deciding is it worth 200 quid more than a Day train .I've a Disabled Railcard as my hearing is bad so that does reduce cost
A real nuisance, as I'd prefer use the train more, with the bike. But it's quicker to cycle to the Lakes, Highlands or wherever
The advantage of the Disabled Railcard is you can get the same discount for a companion. For anyone 30 & under or 60 & over there are railcards giving the same discount to individuals simply by being in the right age-group. It doesn't take much travel to recoup the cost of the railcard, slightly longer if you only use "advance" fares (I just looked & can still get a round trip to Glasgow from Wigan - my nearest WCML station - for under £25 with my senior railcard).Disabled Railcard wrote:Receive Personal Independence Payment or Adult Disability Payment at any rate...

On the wider point of bikes on trains, if I've counted right, I've been on 12 trains with my bike this month (6 were in the space of 2 days) & had no problems. Only 1 (Avanti) needed a reservation & there was no problem getting that (combined with a cheap Advance ticket). Northern & Transport for Wales continue to be laid back about the number of bikes as long as they aren't causing an obstruction. Avanti usually have space for a walk up booking for the short hop between Wigan & Warrington/Crewe when I use that route getting to/from Chester (I generally prefer the longer ride to/from Newton-le-Willows as it is a single train, so no connections to miss, & approx 2/3 the fare).

When I tried it a while back it loaded a CT style route but also showed the route of the original GPX so you can see where they differ. Then you can decide if you want to drag the CT route to fit the GPX, or not, before saving it.
