I had a similar dilemma a few years ago so got a Specialized Tricross thinking that I would do some touring, off road type stuff. Reality was that i rode it on the road and disused railways. In short I heavy low specced bike for little reward.
I still wanted the ability to ride off road so bought a 2nd hand Pinnacle Expede CX bike - brilliant. Has mudguard eyes, takes 32mm or 28mm tyres. But I still ride my rode bike 99.9% of the time.
I now have a great allrounder. A Genesis equilibrium that I do all my riding with and with 28mm tyres still good on gravel railways and around reservoirs.
Get a bigger equilibrium!
