Re: Pads for BB7

I think the mountain bike version has it written on them and is possibly a different colour?
Cable outer all the way.
I have more bends than I would like but that's the nature of drop bars (it has to follow the contour of the bar).

Re: Pads for BB7

No contamination all only a month or two old. On a long decent the pads will bite and I can let the lever off a fair bit but generally it's possibly worse than my old cantelever brake that I took off in disgust. Brand new cable from sjc with new Shimano outer. The brakes have been disappointing from the start due to the pads needing to be set so close to the rotors to get decent braking before the levers contact the bars. Maybe the cable outers aren't good enough and compress under braking.

Pads for BB7

My tandem is fitted with new BB7 disc brakes. Ideally I would like to be able to stop the bike with either front or back alone should one fail. I can't stop the bike just on the back brake, possibly due to the sponginess of a long cable. However, is there a better pad out there other than the standard ones that come with the calliper?

converting to three speed

The wife has a Specialized Centrum single speed. She loves the simplicity of it having no gears at all. However, now she's got faster she is spinning out on the flat. They did make this bike with a three speed shimano hub. I am wondering if I can source a hub and have the wheel rebuilt or maybe find a complete wheel somewhere. Any ideas?

Who knows their tandems?

Isn't this rather overpriced or would the components be worth a large amount of money?

Re: Compact gearing - how does it work?

A tad confusing yes. In our household we have two bikes with compact doubles of the same 105 model. One bike has a long cage rear deralier whilst the other is a short cage - any idea why they would make or fit two versions?

Re: What connector for 105?

Nope, nothing, no pin and no link - came from Chainreaction (who I must say have been pretty crap lately but that's another story).

Tell a lie - I just found it but it is your normal pin and not the snap off variety. Panic over.

What connector for 105?

Just bought a replacement chain - Shimano 105 5600 ten speed.
Didn't realise they aren't supplied with a link or a pin  . Would you use a Shimano pin or recommend a quick link?

Re: Front changer trouble

I fitted the changer with the cable off, adjusted the inner screw to align the plate with the inner chainring. Attached the cable and pulled it tight, operated the lever only to find it won't reach the outer ring, so I then have to tighten the cable to get enough pull to get it there which then cocks up the whole range. Most odd.
Have to add the changer came fitted with a Pro set block but the range was no where near in the right position with it fitted.

Re: Diabolical Discs

Update on this: just back in from a wet ride and no trouble really. The 2mm shaved off the mount has worked fine. The rear pads gave out a few "chirps" now and again but nothing to worry about, the front only squealed under braking now and again. Looking at the rotors even though brand new there always seems to be a slight warp. Power seems to improve as the miles stack up.

Re: Front changer trouble

Ok I've got a brand new Shimano 105 changer on there but still getting problems. If I back off the adjuster screw and tighten the cable I just make it to the top ring without touching the stop on the screw. When I then change to the middle ring it drops into this neutral position again which indicates to me that the cable tension needs trimming ie. slightly less tension. Do this and it won't make the top ring when chainging up.
Do they make sti brake levers for double rings? It's almost as if I don't have the range somewhere for triple rings.

Just fitted some 32 Gatorskin Hardshells - seem a pretty good tyre for toughness/rolling resistance

Re: Front changer trouble

 there isn't a front mech.
will play with it again later in the week when the mech arrives. Only way to be sure will be to measure the chain wear I suppose. We have another Tandem with similar gears (Dawes Double Edge) never had as much trouble as this one but that's an old eight speed on rear. Mountain bike cables are more relaxed too - none of the bends along handlebars like drops provide.
