Re: Converting a Road Bike to a Tourer

Here is a guy who is using the Riverside 1 for touring. It seems to hold up well.

Re: A Couple Of Rear LED Questions

I overcame the problem of somewhere to put the rear light when loaded up with this. It works really well and has a flashing setting too. It is supposed to last 10,000 hours, though I am not relying on that. I do carry a spare rear light in case of helmet loss or theft.

I have never driven a car and am 47, I have had bikes all my life. From bikes with roller breaks and Sturmey 3 gears to my present bike with STIs. But I like the fact that technology dose not stand still, I would not go back to my first bike for love nor money.

Re: Converting a Road Bike to a Tourer

I was going to use the Riverside 1 before I bought the Voyage. The Riverside 1 is a good weight and is steel framed. I spent a few days riding a friends to get the feel. It is a nice bike at a good price, this will leave a bigger budget for alterations.

Re: Clipless shoe and peadal combo?

OK, I have been on a long ride with my new SPD setup, and I can honestly say…”I am sold”.

There is a particularly long hill (for me anyway) about 25 miles from us just outside Poissy and it always defeats me about ¾ of the way up. But not this time, all the way and with a gear to spare. I now know how much my feet moving about all over the place when tiered added to my inability to do the hill.

I could not be happier.

Re: Converting a Road Bike to a Tourer

You will have to check the clearance for your heels when you have panniers on the rack as road bikes have shorter chainstays than touring bikes. And if you have to set the panniers too far back you risk very poor steering (especially on climbs)if you have no load on the front.

rooseybear wrote:It's worth reading up on locating the cleat properly for your natural riding style, knee injuries can be quite common if set up badly as the foot is not free to 'float' around and therefore gets pulled out of it's natural alignment. Once set up most people would be very reluctant to remove at all and when you do change them make sure you mark out where the old ones were so the new ones match up.

Also put some anti seize grease stuff on the thread, if you walk a lot on them the alan key hole can get worn down making removing difficult, mine will require drilling out or something when replacement is needed :( Keep an eye on it to change out before in happens.

All good points.

I have for the time being set the cleats in the neutral position (so called) which is middle middle I believe. The ride I have done so far is short and maybe not the best to determine the cleat position. I will going on a longer ride tomorrow to try and determine the correct position for the cleats.

Re: Clipless shoe and peadal combo?

One more question to you all. Is it OK to replace the cleats with the blanks the shoes came with when using the shoe for walking and then putting the cleats back again? Will this repartition damage the mounting plates (in the shoe) or hex bolts at all?

Thanks.

Re: Clipless shoe and peadal combo?

Well, I went with the SH-MT33L shoes with the PD-M324 pedals. After about a minute to adjust the clip to about medium release and practicing clipping in and out on both feet, I went for a ride. I must say I am happy with both shoe and pedal.

The only thing I might change it to swap the cleats to a single direction release as these shoes come with a multi-directional release and I am not sure I trust them not to pop out with a heel lift at some point.

Thanks all for the options and feedback.

Re: Clipless shoe and peadal combo?

I think I can allow for off bike shoes in my panniers as I carry less clothes than others (I prefer to wash as I go and dry them on the bike lashed to the back). So I could really go for a less casual type shoe and get a stiffer pair for the bike.

The M087s are much stiffer than the shoe you're looking at, but are still ok to walk in. I wouldn't want to hop off my bike and do a tour of the local cathedral or something though, but they are decent enough to walk around a cafe or some such without pain.

That looks like a good combo and just around my budget. Thanks.

Clipless shoe and peadal combo?

Hi All,
I have decided to go clipless and would like to know if this is a good combination for touring please?

Shimano MT23 Trail/Touring Shoes with Shimano M324 Combination Pedals

I like the idea of combination pedals but do not know if they just become a pain or not? And as you will see I am on a small budget of about £100.

Thanks for any feedback.

Re: Handlebar Position for Touring

I have just replaced the 100mm stem that came with the Voyage with an 80mm stem, which in conjunction with the extender meant I could drop the bars back to the correct position and still have a comfortable ride on the hoods. I am a happy bunny now.
