Re: Favourite quotations

I like a line from Dirty Harry :

"opinions are like A***holes..... everyone's got one!"

A friend of mine made one up based on the philosophical "tree in the forest" musing.

"If a man says something in a forest and there's no woman around, is he still wrong ?"

Re: Quiz: are you an IN or an OUT?

I was hoping this would stay as a quiz showing people's % instead of comments.

Thought it would be good if it stayed as just in/out % it would be good to run through it all and have a look at how it's going.

Re: Transporting bike via Air: Factors to minimise damage

I'll only speak from my experience.

I've flown twice with my bike . Once from Barcelona to Gatwick and once from Malaga to Gatwick.
Both times the airlines insisted on boxing up.

On the first occasion (BARCA to GTW) I boxed it up real well with extra cardboard on the bottom and top and other areas. ( I went into a local bike shop and they were very happy to offload one of their boxes).
I put signs on it saying FRAGILE and arrows pointing "UP THIS WAY".
On arrival I saw my bike come out of the oversized baggage door. It was upside down. Now I don't mind it being one way or the other side but upside down is a bit of a pi$$take. My bike was ok as i'd gone OCD on boxing it up but I complained to the baggage people.
I actually said to one of the guys working there , that i thought was a baggage handler "my bike has arrived upside down". He replied in a cockney accent "you're lucky it arrived at all mate, haha".

On the second occasion from Malaga I had quite a bit of trouble getting it booked in and had to take it from one place to another. getting it weighed and scanned at several different places.

It's put me off flying with my bike but I had no better option at the time.

Re: Brexit will cost workers £38 a week in wages

As has been said, these experts don't have a clue.

The Tories are well over their numbers for net migration. They were aiming for (promised) 10's of thousands but we now have 333,000. Now as a margin of error that is quite off the chart.

Add Turkey and the other 4 countries with bad economics and we can see that number go through the roof.

As far as wages and house prices go:

If you increase the population you lower wages so you could easily say that by being in the EU we will suffer lower wages.

Also, if you have more people wanting to live here you create more demand on housing. Then What happens to house prices ?

I agree with another posted that says a lowering in house prices would be good for people. Our house prices in this country are insane.

Re: Porridge when camping

I usually soak the oats over night and that creates a milk like texture. It also good to add linseeds which need to be soaked.
I generally get a good mixed fruit and nut bag too and maybe chop up a couple of dates
Best Mixed nuts i've found a t the moment are from Asda. they're £1.70 and they're called Golden nut mix. Make sure they're the ones without the peanuts.
I get good and cheap oats from Lidls. Also they do good soft dates there.

If you soak with a little less water than normal over night you can just top up with hot water if you like it warm. I don't i'm happy with it cold.

The reason I didn't put it in Teashop was because it Teashop says it's for "non cycling" discussion.

This topic is about cycling.

I couldn't find the section for F'tards

Re: Passing distance for cyclists petition

Yes, anyone that signed the petition got the email.

What utter rubbish it is.

They say "1m passing would be hard to enforce".

The rest of Europe has 1.5m passing law

Stopping Terrorism is hard to enforce and is very costly but more people die on our roads than from Terrrrrrrrr (insert G.W.Bush accent).

I'm sick of the BS in this country. So many other countries in Europe have a safer cycling environment. I feel like i'm wasting my time here hoping for things to change when I can live a better life abroad where cyclists aren't treated like gutter scum. Let the roads fill with cars and maybe then the drivers will slowly realise .... well, maybe they won't even then.

à plus tard !

No. Corbyn for PM

but.... I have to say that Boris talks sense in this speech and he's the only Tory i've ever liked, and that's hard for me to say as all Tories tend to make my skin crawl.

Thanks Steady rider for all that info !

Interesting about Ireland and their 1.5 metres petition. I've signed it. I think we all should . The more countries get this legislation the better.

I've never had a problem with Ryanair. They do what they say on the tin. They get you (almost) where you want to go for the cheapest price but this sort of hatred towards cyclist means ......

........he's lost my vote:

Passing distance for cyclists petition

I know this is on another thread but I only found it by accident ( pardon the sick pun ) so I thought if I had missed it then many others may have too so i'm posting it here.

I think passing distance is the one main thing that puts people off cycling. For sure it's my main bug bear.

I also don't think the distance goes far enough but it's better than nothing. I think it should be 1.5 across the board.

Re: Has Anyone Toured With a Guitar?

I met Joe on the World Naked Bike RIde in Brighton a few years ago. He was with the "Pleasant Revolution" that all had Surly Big Dummys carrying their instruments. it was amazing. We all ended up on Brighton beach pedalling to make juice for them to play.

http://www.pleasantrevolution.net/

I found this for carrying a guitar on a bike. Needs a good welder but I think if taking a guitar on tour is important to you then this is definitely worth a look :
