Re: Winter gloves

I use Buffalo hi vis mitts. Warm and breathable, not waterproof or padded or Dachstein Mitts which are very warm and breathable but not waterproof. The thickness of the wool acts as padding. BTW, I don't use STI's

Re: New version of Spa tourer being offered

Regarding sizing, I am 6 ft 3 and a half and looking at the Spa Tourer's geometry, it's almost identical to my 62cm Surly Disc Trucker and Cross Check, both of which fit me like gloves

Re: Deciding on bike - best keep Commuting and fun separate?

It depends on a few variables :-) I have started riding my 'best' bike to work because it is fun, my commute involves quiet country lanes plus some off-road if I want and at work there is secure bike storage. When I worked at a different office my commute meant busy roads and insecure bike storage I...

Re: Beeston Rylands - River Path

I've cycled from Trent Lock to Nottingham a few times as part of a longer route to work. I have got off and walked at Beeston Marina plus the lock (whose name I can't remember) just past Trent Lock on the way to Beeston. I don't know how old or relevant the signs are but I wouldn't want to annoy fol...

Re: Stop Line Bandits : What to do?

Going off topic with Mick F - There's the remains of a gibbet post near the village of Congerstone in Leicestershire; http://www.tripmondo.com/united-kingdom/england/congerstone/picture-gallery-of-congerstone/ On Gibbet Lane just outside the hamlet of Bilstone. It's a good if slightly morbid place t...

Re: Think it's the time of year to look at my tyres

I think fitness and gearing matter far more than tyre width. I have completed Audax events with friends on road bikes with 25 and 23mm tyres. They had spd pedals whereas I had 50mm wide tyres and flat platform pedals. Without racing each other we finished 75 miles within 200 metres of each other at ...

Re: Think it's the time of year to look at my tyres

I have Vittoria Hypers on my Audax bike, a Surly Cross Check. 700 x 37 which are actually 35mm. Plenty of grip and quick enough and comfy. I am 89 kg at the mo. On my commuter I have 26 x 2 inch Marathons which I find good for all year round on and off road use

Re: 2 weeks cycling hollidays with 4 kids in Europe

Holland, for scenery, good food, majority of people speak some English and are friendly, great cakes and ALL ages of people cycle because the cycle paths and roads are cycle friendly and safe. We are doing a one week tour there in May 2016 after 3 holidays there when we have cycled on day trips

Re: Should I abandon my Croix De Fer?

I am 6 feet 3 and a half and ride Surly Disc Trucker and a Cross check both in 62cm frames. My saddles are set at 820mm b-b ti top of saddle. If you need a new bike look at Surly as they do 64cm frames. I would try to tweak your current bike first though

Re: More Brompton Qs

I have a 34" inside leg and the standard seatpost was too short for me. I have the telescopic seatpost. This isn't an issue because I have set the top inner seatpost at a height which when I extend the main seatpost to the max is the correct height for me. So I have just the normal job of exten...

Re: Amateur 150mi tour in memory of a friend. Tips appriciat

I would suggest following parts of NCN6 but stick mostly with quiet roads as they will be easier to ride and give better views, access to cafes etc. Go for a slick/semi-slick tyre and lock out the suspension on your bike. I did most of my touring on a cheap 26" MTB

Looking good!

Regarding the weight of my C-C compared to the Disc Trucker, some of the weight difference will be in the wheels as the DT has Rigida Grizzly rims plus the tyres are Continental Sport Contact. You are right though Brucey, very noticeable!

Re: Surly Cross Check Project - Help, Advice, Suggestions pl

Brucey - I bought 2nd hand wheels built by a LBS and previously owned by pete75 of this parish. The front hub is a Shimano dynamo, maybe a 3n72a. Can't remember what the rear hub is and from memory the rims are Exal 17. I haven't got mudguards fitted at the moment or a rack and weighed on my scales ...

Re: Surly Cross Check Project - Help, Advice, Suggestions pl

I meant to put this update on several weeks ago. I have built the bike up now and my C-C rides beautifully. Much more responsive than the Disc Trucker but not twitchy. I really like the v brakes, wheels and and the ride on the Vittoria Hypers. The bars that I have are Salsa PRM3, same as on my Disc ...

Re: Toe clips or cleats?

My tours (and all my cycling including Audax) are done with flat pedals. No cleats, no straps. Whichever suits you will be fine, there is no right or wrong
