Re: Calling Brompton riders

The Brompton website has (or certainly had recently) a part of the brochure which showed a table of gear inches for each model. I have an M model 6 speed with a 44 tooth chainring. Bottom gear is 29 inches from memory. I don't find the 2 triggers for gearing any more complicated than STI's or drivin...

Re: Surly Disc Trucker Front Rack

I tried a Tubus front rack, might have been a Tara? It was 2 s shaped frames. Couldn't get it to fit my DT and ended up selling it. Had to go back to a Surly Nice rack

Re: Handlebar bag - Carradice or Ortlieb?

Thanks, good suggestions. I don't need a light to be mounted on the bag because I have a dynamo light mounted on the fork crown. I have the Carradice now which is plenty big enough for the intended use (Audax)

Re: Mudguards, narrow, good quality?

Spa Cycles have an offer on SKS Chromoplastic mudguards, silver and black for £22 a pair. They have 700 x 35mm. I have just bought a pair for my Audax bike and have them on my tourer and commuter. They are good value

Re: V-brake levers for drop bars

I have Tektro 520's on my Surly Cross-check. Very good braking and no need to set up within a fag paper from the rim. The v brakes on my C C are Deore XT too

Re: october tour sleeping bag

No, not stupid. I would say it depends on how cold you are when you sleep. I would go with the heavier bag for the extra warmth but 20 odd years ago in my 20's I happily bivvied out between May and September with a minimalist approach when I was a mad keen mountaineer. Have you used the one season b...

Re: Dutch Campsites - Cooking Area?

Thanks for your replies, much appreciated. I would like to camp for the whole week but it may be hard to 'sell' this to Mrs M_W :-)

Dutch Campsites - Cooking Area?

Mrs M_W and I are looking at a first European Tour for a week and are thinking about Holland as we have friends near Groningen which would make a convenient destination. We have had the pleasure of a dozen or more day rides in Holland which we really enjoyed and (with our Caravan) we have stayed on ...

Re: Sore bum!

Different saddles suit different people. I love Brooks saddles, especially when I have bought them at discount prices. I don't wear padded shorts, just very thin 'technical' boxer shorts and thin non-cycling shorts

Handlebar bag - Carradice or Ortlieb?

I am in the market for a new handlebar bag for my Audax bike. Requirements are that the bag must be waterproof and come with a clear plastic map case on the lid. I have an Ortlieb bag on my tourer and am pleased with it except for one point, the bag is tricky to open/close when the map case is on to...

Re: How To Calm Down a Ranting Driver?

I don't stop to exchange words with idiots anymore after a bad experience cycling near Market Bosworth. Mrs M_W were forced into evasive action and rode into a hedge to avoid a collision with a cretinous driver who chose to overtake us on a blind bend on the approach to a canal bridge. I shook my fi...

Re: How To Calm Down a Ranting Driver?

Mrs M_W and I were cycling on the canal towpath, shared cycle and pedestrian use allowed, and she rang her tinkling bell to warn a group of pedestrians that we were coming up behind them. They promptly let us past but Madame Motormouth couldn't resist shouting 'why the aggressive bell?' I am afraid ...

Re: Surly Cross Check Project - Help, Advice, Suggestions pl

I have a pair of Salsa compact drop bars on my Disc Trucker and ordered a pair of the same from my Cross Check. I can't remember offhand the name but they aren't on the current Salsa website. Mine have a 4 degree outward flare on the drops. Quite a bit less than the Cowbell. I ordered my bars from a...

Re: Confidence : How to rebuild it after a near complete los

Sorry to hear about your accident Daisy Chain and glad that you are ok physically. I would suggest cycling in a group or with friends and the other suggestions too. One thing that gave me confidence after some near misses was reading a book called Cycle Craft and acting on the advice in the book. Go...
