Re: What do you do when the going gets tough?

A bit like Vorpal, I chant 'I think I can, I know I can' and 'I can do this, I am doing this' or 'It's not the North Face of the Eiger, is it?'. If i have run out or am running out of energy I stop, eat and reflect on what I have done thus far and past achievements

Re: Rear lights are driving me mad

I have dynamo lighting and use a B&M Toplight on the rear of my pannier rack which gives a constant light and a Cateye barrel type light mounted on the seapost set on flashing mode. My commute is mainly unlit country lanes

Re: Help with lowering gear ratio after knee replacement

Steve - Spa Cycles sell a Stronglight chainset with a single chainring which is exactly the same as Brompton own brand. I have a 44T chainring on mine which was £20 from Spa a couple of years ago. You may be able to fit a 40T if a 44 isn't low enough

Re: Bike provision on Beeston tram route and a question

I think the problem is that the people who plan and design transport networks are generally not cyclists and have no understanding of the needs of cyclists. I live 15 miles southwest of Nottingham and I have commuted from home to work but this was via Trent Lock and the canal towpath and cycle path ...

Re: Surly Cross Check Project - Help, Advice, Suggestions pl

I've gone for 9 speed on the C-C. My bikes are 8 and 9 speed for the same reason as 531colin and R2. I said before about 700 x 37 Vittoria hyper, I have checked and they are actually 700 x 35 :-)

There seem to be ISIS operatives in the UK too.....Should we advise all tourists to give the UK a wide berth?

Re: Surly Cross Check Project - Help, Advice, Suggestions pl

Funnily enough I have bought a 62cm Cross Check and will be building it up very soon. The parts I have gone for are V brakes, Deore LX; Tektro 520 brake levers on drop bars, Dura Ace bar end shifters, stronglight triple chainset in 46/34/24 with 11-32 cassette, XT front derailleur and Deore rear der...

Re: Schwalbe Marathon Plus

My first thought was 'Lucky so and so'! :-) Never used M+so can't really help but I use ordinary Marathon on tour and they are good for the mix of on/off road that we do

Re: Hello and thoughts on first bike project

Sorry, I should have mentioned that I built the bike up from frame and forks using parts from a donor MTB. The Troll has bars with a slight rise and aren't swept back.

Re: Hello and thoughts on first bike project

Would the stem angle / length affect the handling too?

I swapped the 80mm high rise stem on my Surly Troll for an 80mm stem of a lower angle and this made the bike handling much more stable

Re: LEJOG: when to go and which bike?

I haven't done LEJOG but on the basis that an end to end is a tour I would say that any bike that is reliable and comfortable to cycle around 70 miles a day on would be suitable (based on your time allowance). As for luggage, my lightest b and b load for summer in the UK was a barbag and a rackbag. ...

Re: Road rage

I would try a letter of complaint to the bus company mentioning that cycle paths are optional and not obligatory and pointing out that you had done nothing to warrant being sworn at or more importantly perhaps, being the subject of a close pass. I would ask for an apology and mention the footage tha...

Re: Hello and thoughts on first bike project

Could be Colin. I know that KOPS is a guide rather than a hard and fast rule, but I find coincidentally or otherwise that when my knee is at or about over the pedal spindle with the crank arm horizontal, I feel in balance. If I have the saddle set too far forward I feel out of balance and there is t...

Re: Hello and thoughts on first bike project

I'm 6 foot 3 tall and I'd suggest having a look at the Long Haul Trucker instead of the Cross-Check. I have both bikes and there is a longer uncut steerer on the LHT. On the 60cm LHT the fork length is 390mm and the head tube is 189mm = 579mm. This is 19mm longer than the 60cm Cross-Check. The LHT h...
