People have been getting refunds on cancelling their membership. I saw one case where there was an exchange of e-mails but most seem ti be getting a pro-rata refund.

I'd suspect you have an even stronger case as you joined the CTC and, in practice they changed (without asking you).

Ian

That wasn't offered to me..they can have it, I'll let it run this year. Cycling Ireland is 26 quid which includes personal accident. So if Im knocked down this year I'll be claiming twice!

Re: Cycling World magazine

There was a cycling world mag from the early 80's with a nice photo on the front cover of an elderly gentleman pipe in mouth taking a tea break in the corner of a field. He was staring across a meadow while waiting on a kettle to boil on his stove. It's a longshot but if anyone has a copy I'd love to have it for the sake of nostalgia, probably 83 or 84.

Re: Galway in May

A nice day trip would be out along the coast to the Gaeltacht (Irish speaking) area around Carraroe or Lettermore where the signposting is in Irish only. In Kerry my choice would be Dingle or 'an Daingean', another Gaeltacht area, and a visit to the Blasket Islands. We often get a spell of warm weather around the beginning of May.

Re: ctc in ireland

We haven't done any camping trips as a group just the odd hostelling weekend. When touring alone I prefer to travel point to point moving on each day, and plan the route myself. Here's a camping trip I did a few years ago, but I now prefer hostels or B&bs as the back has been giving trouble...age catching up.
Also cycle toured in Switzerland, Italy and Benelux countries. Most of Ireland, Donegal is hard to beat. Some of Scotland, Arran, Mull. Loved Wales, but I have never cycled in England. Again it's exploring the laneways of the local countryside I love most.

Re: ctc in ireland

Would be great to have a well travelled touring man like yourself with us the odd day Jags. Just let us know beforehand as we take the odd Sunday off. We do some weekends away, maybe you could give us a guided tour around your part of the country some time?

Re: ctc in ireland

Hi fellas, I'm from up north near Armagh, part of a small touring group there. I also go touring on the Continent, but its hard to beat exploring the green paradise right on our doorstep! Surely there's more of you down south, I think there's about 300 odd in the north, though a lot of them seem to be non active cyclists. If you're ever up our way on a Sunday why not join us for the day!

Re: Lôn Las Cymru

I also intend to do this trip early summer next year. I tried it last September from Holyhead down as far as Corris and loved it but chickened out in fear of the climb after Machynellth, or rather the return jouney. I only intend to go as far as the cycling museum at Llnadrindrod Wells. The things that struck me about Wales was the spoken Welsh language especially around Caernarfon and the amazing stone buildings on further south. The climb out of Dolgellau on the sustrans route up to the falconry farm at Peny Bryn is tough but worth it, just allow loads of extra time. The pass on the main road is much easier which I took on the way back. Also from Holyhead I took the old A5 on the way out which is much quicker and more direct, but the Sustrans route on minor roads which I took on the way back is also very good just a little longer.

New informal group Northern Ireland

New informal subgroup of CTC Northern Ireland based in County Tyrone/Armagh. We value traditonal touring values combined with the advantages of the latest GPS technology. High quality cycling, top of the game in local cycle touring. www.ctcmu.co.uk Would be good to see a dedicated section here for ctc members in Ireland, north and south.

Re: Milan / Lake Como Info request.

And don't miss the cyclist's church, Madonna del Ghisallo, and the cyclist's museum beside it. The climb up from Bellagio is a tough one, but worth it and you'll get 'ciao' from the dozens of cyclists you'll meet on the way.

Re: Drumming up

Interesting. I suppose the expression itself could mean drumming up a meal, tea or whatever. Nothing about it on google, seems to be also still used in Scotland. Came across this article about a drum up near Glasgow http://www.heraldscotland.com/life-styl ... s-1.931134
We are based in County Tyrone soon to be transformed into a new ctc group

Drumming up

Does anyone know where this expression comes from? On our Sunday club runs we always have the old Primus out all year round.. tea, soup, stew for all, the highlight of the day. We've always called it drumming up. Saddlebag, stove and full cape when wet, exploring country lanes and tracks..pure magic! Are there any other diehard groups out there who prefer their lunch outdoors using the stove in the old traditional way ?
