Re: Shared use Path: Overtaking into head on traffic

Hmm, so that would then be like encountering a pedestrian walking on the right hand side of a country road with no pavement (as recommended in the highway code) as you drive up to them on the left. In such a situation, you would then only be able to drive round them if it was clear to do so. Thanks...

Re: Are we riding too fast.

The satnav thing in my daughters newish car chirps up when you are exceeding the limit. So should be easy for such owners to stay within limits. Not in in my old banger though. The only thing that chirps up when I am doing something wrong is my better half. :) Modern satnavs (including many separat...

Re: Self driving car kills pedestrian.

What worries me about that research (in a general sense) is that it is targeted at maximum financial profit rather than benefit for society. And I worry that the "solution" from maximising profit will be somewhat different from one maximising "benefit for society" (and guess who...

Re: Self driving car kills pedestrian.

I'm all for new technology when it works, but so far it looks to me like self-driving cars ought to be banned for good. Firstly, it isn't yet anything like good enough for the job, and secondly, it's clear that even at this early stage it's clear that humans are incapable of paying attention when i...

Re: Meeting the Highwaymen - Hints and Tips

On the question of counts of cyclists, a phrase highwaymen are quick to use when it suits their purpose is "supressed demand." Unfortunately, their purpose is only ever increasing provision for motor traffic. Sounds a potentially useful question: "Can you tell us how you have measure...

Re: Meeting the Highwaymen - Hints and Tips

What are pseudo-motorway junctions? What are NMU routes?NMU? What is IAN195/16? Kind of struggling to understand what you're actually saying. Pseudo-motorway junctions: Junctions between roads which are designed for high-speed motor use, with slipway lanes to allow motor vehicles to maintain the sp...

Re: Can you swim?

Not the same pool Mick. I was much earlier than that and the old pool had been replaced by your time there I think. We took a thermometer from the school and discovered that the sea was warmer than the pool. We did swim in the sea but had to dodge round the turds and condoms floating around. In ret...

I do, which is why I shop locally for what I can (although it often costs a bit more).

I knew I'd be the evil one :? Re: Near miss with a pedestrian

The person behind you isn’t your responsibility, I do lift off (not brake) for most aideroads... it just makes sense. Quite so, whether driving or cycling. Not only side roads either, there is such a thing as a "surprise horizon" - anywhere where something could emerge from. I slow and am...

Re: Too expensive for a bike clean?

Agree with the point about jet washes, but objecting to £12 for someone to clean you 'bike is really a bit much. Given that materials will be used and time and (hopefully) some skill, do you really want them paid less than the minimum wage? As for those who say they pay half this to get their car wa...

Someone who speeds so much that he admits to fitting a laser jammer to prevent speed cameras working? I wonder what his attitude to vulnerable road users might be.

It appears that plastic straws are going the way of the dodo , in time. Won't affect me much, I reckon - though it'll certainly be an inconvenience to many people. Buying single-portion fruit juice cartons, those that have a straw attached, for consumption on the hoof, might be badly hit. We do tha...

Based on your personal opinion or the results of the poll (which if anything suggest an increase!). I can't see any consensus for a reduction. Based on reducing the workload of the volunteer moderators. Not my reason but it's an understandable one. My poll is only advisory, of course... I also don'...
