We where on holiday in Cuba before Christmas.
All the German and Canadian hillwalkers based at the hotel, and there where a lot of them, wore cycle helmets for their walks.
Chatting in the bar in the evening it seems that cycle helmets light weight and ventilation make them ideal for general walking, just in case of a trip or fall.
I suppose it's part of the safety culture that seems to exist now, squash players wearing safety specs and some cyclists wearing clear glasses when on the bike.

Re: Campag 980 mech range.
Just to compound things; I have a number of 52 tooth TA chainsets which would give me a 39 inch bottom gear with a 28 rear sprocket... Same Question . . . Will the 980 campag cope. ? Or is it time to go down the Sora route ?

Decided against the greasy breakfast, (delicious), and took the dog to the beach in the rain instead.

Re: Campag 980 mech range.
Hi Mick, i did suspect it may work. However i thought i would ask the question. My frames are Carlton Pro Am, (built by Dave Marsh in his days at the Carlton-in-Lindrick factory, alledgly ) , and the Raleigh versions with Campag pattern forged dropouts.
We are currently at Tolgus Mount near Redruth.
And my bike has a failed rear wheel. So its Smokey Joes for brekkie in the morning rather than cycling I'm afraid.
Yes, spare wheels would have been a good idea. . . .

Campag 980 mech range.
All my 3 bikes are based around 531 frames and Campag 980 rear mech's.
Will the 980 cope with a 28 tooth max rear sprocket ?
Answers on a postcard please. As they say.

Re: How is the Local Bike Shop going to survive?
Hayle Cycles . . In Hayle Cornwall, called them this morning after having to end my morning ride due to 2 broken spokes. Explained i was, not a local, no spare wheel , help.
The response was " bring the wheel in and hopefully i can sort it in an hour".
Superb attitude.
The biggest threat to the LBS in my opinion is the rise of the cycle charities that will service or repair your bike using volunteer staff. No wages and often council rent free premises will be the final nail in the coffin of the LBS.

Nutrition. . real food vs gels etc.
Lots of stuff in the cycling press about nutrition and various " gel " products.
Surly there is a racing / sportive diet that is based on actual food ?
And if so where is it published.
I understand the need for diet control to achieve high standards , but there must be away on actual food ???

Re: Do you wear a helmet?
Lol lol. With you on that one. Tried explaining to family that most head injuries happen to pedestrians, tripping. Wont believe it.
There is a large group of cyclists who seem to revel in the " cycling is dangerous " approach. Bit of a misguided macho thing i think.
Cycling is not dangerous ! ! !

Re: Do you wear a helmet?
My feeling as well. No problem with helmets, only the necessity to wear them.
Can i make an insurance claim if i fall of my bike without taking due care.
After all, I'm wearing a helmet so I'm indestructible.
I had a bad crash on ice 6 weeks ago and refused to allow an ambulance to be called as knew they would ask if i was wearing a helmet. Hip injury, but they would have recorded it as a cycling accident, not wearing helmet.
Wife picked me up, changed clothes and attended walk in medical center as a fall on ice.
You do get bloody minded with age i suppose.

I've just read in " the comic " that you cannot enter a sportive unless you wear a helmet !
Is this true ?

If a vehicle turns left, wheather legal, un-sited or careless your still dead if you go under it.
Fine, state your right to filter.
But you'll still be dead after the HGV rolls over your head, helmet ot not.
If you are riding along a straight road with no junctions, why would a vehicle turn left? Where are they going to turn, are they going to mount the pavement?
More to the point - a vehicle shouldn't move in any direction that it's driver can't see to be clear (note that this is alot stronger than can't see an obstruction)
But your still dead if they pull left to answer their phone. . Don't do it. The point is; being right doesn't stop you from dying !

Re: Securing bike in a garage but not drilling holes
I've just been allocated a garage by the local council.
Suggestions for securing the door, the Yale lock fitted will not stop anyone for a minute especially a 13 yr. old Fwit...
The garage is to be storage for many bikes and kayaks ... and the MX5.

Re: Another cyclist death: left-turning lorry
Often on this forum there seems to be a "blame all drivers of motorised vehicles" approach to life.
Then when the posters get off their high horse and put their bike onto the back of their car and drive off they are without blemish.
Has a poll been done ? What is the percentage of CTC members that drive a car... I suspect 90% plus...
A terrible loss of life, and if SH is correct, and I don't doubt he is, wholly the fault of the cyclist.
Absolutely of no comfort to the family, but as a 100k a year driver and very active cyclist the "us and them" approach of many on here is, frankly, a disgrace.
Blame motorists for everything.... until we drive away in our car.
I hope some one puts a "Ghost bike" at the scene, on my visits to Ulster they always make me think about the way I drive.
A pointless loss of life, my condolences for the family and also for the driver of the vehicle.
He didn't get up this morning planning to end a life.

Re: Do you wear a helmet?
It's like this for us ...
Main roads and mountains; Helmet.
Cycle paths and canal paths no helmet.
Low risk = helmet. No risk = no helmet.
CYCLING IS NOT DANGEROUS !!!
Stop trying to make non cyclists think it is !!!!!!!
