Re: Why do 'Breakways' breakaway?

You mean so they get in front and hope to stay there? Doesnt sound like a winning plan. It’s no certainty, but getting into the break is the only hope to win if you’re not a sprinter on a flat stage or a GC contender on a heavy climbing day. The numbers taking part are considerable yet it's always ...

Re: Why do 'Breakways' breakaway?

The main reason remains that breakaways are not always caught and sometimes someone in the breakaway wins. Winning at the Tour de France is a pretty big incentive to suffer for a few hours! Most people cannot stay in the peloton and sprint at the end, because most people can’t sprint as well as the...

Re: Why do 'Breakways' breakaway?

Thanks for all the replies. Got it. The more you know the more you enjoy it.

Have to say I like Dave Miller's commentaries. He reveals a lot of technical stuff. Often wonder what happened to the commentator who was most notable for his oft repeated phrase 'Hello what's this then'.

Re: Why do 'Breakways' breakaway?

Intermediate points. There are normally a couple of towns where the first 3-5 can pick up points towards the green (points) jersey and maybe a cash prize. Same in the mountain with points the polka dot jersey. And just maybe the breakaway stays away ............. :D Sounds right but why do they mai...

Why do 'Breakways' breakaway?

If it's not a silly question why do (lets take the TDF) riders race to form a Breakaway, usually very early on, when breakaways are always dragged back into the pelaton anyway and they never win. Why doesnt every rider stay with the Pelaton and sprint at the finish?

Re: Rumbling Rohloff

could be an even-even /wrong chain link thing, or just that you set the chain tension too high last time round. If you want to find out for sure what makes a difference and what doesn't, you need to do things one at a time only, rather than several at once. cheers Agreed. If it rumbles again I will.

Re: Rumbling Rohloff

Ok. I cleaned the chain (properly with a toothbrush and pot of white spirit) removed and cleaned the chainwheel and sprocket. I dont know if I reveresed the sprocket on reinstalling or not but I could see no signs of wear and then changed the oil. Did seventy miles on it this w/e. Result - no more r...

Re: Rumbling Rohloff

I have the Rohloff sprocket tool and a decent chain whip (crucial) so flipping the sprocket was stright forward. Veering slightly off topic, I notice Rohloff have changed new hubs to a splined sprocket rather than a screw on, there's an adapter to change the originals. https://www.rohloff.de/en/pro...

Re: Rumbling Rohloff

I'm not sure which 'that' you are referring to. The 'flushing oil' has a blue label and is called Cleaning Oil. The regular oil has a yellow label and is called All Seasons Oil. So clean it first with the Cleaning Oil and then apply the All Seasons Oil. Simples! Note that it is generally a good ide...

Re: Rumbling Rohloff

Definitely stick to the Rohloff oil. The SJS 250ml pack of cleaner and oil for £40 could last 10 years! I agree. Just ordered it. There used to be a thriving market in group buying the 1 ltr cans and splitting it, sometimes organised through the Thorn forum. I think someone spotted this market and ...

Re: Rumbling Rohloff

Rohloff make it quite clear that if you use any different oil you will invalidate the guarantee. Although it sounds like marketing they make the point that there are some special plastics used for seals which you risk damaging if you use another oil. Given the cost of the gear and the price of the ...
