Re: Campag Xenon 9spd x 6 spd freewheel
I just thought would these levers work on traditonal cantilevers brakes not the vee brakes?

B/B axle length
Hi, Can anyone advise me of what size b/b axle should I use for a double chainset?
At the mo I'm using a triple chainset and the b/b are cups & bearings.
I think perhaps I should use a sealed unit and if so any recommendations, shimano and axle lenght?
Its going into a 1980s Roberts Touring Frame
Once again,many thanks

Campag Xenon 9spd x 6 spd freewheel
Hi,
Can anyone advise me if these ergos (Campag Xenon) 9spd will work with a shimano HG 6 speed freewheel.
I understand the spacing on the freewheel is 5mm and the ergos shift at 4.6mm.Is this difference enough to throw out the process?
Will I require a 9 speed chain? Will my 1980's chainwheel pick up this type of narrow chain?
Has anyone converted their old (1980s) steel bike using ergos and a freewheel?
If so, can you please advise me of the process.
Furthermore, shimano are to introduce a 7speed sti (Tourney ) this year, but when I dont know when this year.
kind regards

Re: Highlands Return +
Thanks to all for their advice.
Looks like Scotland for me and may even go with my daughter Jess.(Shes an adult)
Furthermore, I like the idea of the Sleeper train and has anyone used this transport method?
Should I book a bed or a leave it at a reclining chair?
Are the beds a little tight?
Bearing in mind I'm 6ft tal about 16 1/2 stones, a bit of a lump!
Last thing shall I camp or B&B ?
Thinking about the luggage and cost of two pitches over and option sharing a room?
Last time I went I think I paid about £12 for B&B. The breakfast were mega yummy.
Or Camp wild?
(Sorry for the scatter brain plan)
Best time of year would you go?

Highlands Return +
Hi,
Ive got this calling to return to the Scottish Highlands and do some further touring.
My last visit on my bike was approximately 20 years ago when I cycled from Inverness to Ullapool then returning to Inverness.
However this time I want to concentrate on the Sutherland area further North of Ullapool.
I have no doubt things have changed and I wish to know the following, please:
1) Cheapest way to Inverness from London (train, plane, car?)
2) Can I camp wild (if required)
3) Midges best time to avoid them
5) Train connect from Inverness to Sutherland area?
I'm pretty sure this will be my last visit to Scotland (if I go) so what should I not miss on such a tour.
Ive got about five days to play with and I'll be using the same touring bike.
Last thing has the weather improved?
kind regards

Re: trailer or panniers on a camping tour
Thanks for the replys and got the ole' grey matter churning.
What about stopping - are ordinary rim brakes up to stopping a trailer and its built up energy?
Would I need new brake blocks (on a old fashion canti's?)
20 years ago I had used Scott Mathauser ,reddish brake block and they were fab?
Any thing like them on the market, if you had the pleasure of using said brake blocks?
Thanks again

trailer or panniers on a camping tour
Hi
I was wondering about how good is it to tour with a trailer compared to panniers?
I like the idea it maybe less stress for the rear wheel and perhaps the bike handles better?
Dont know enough to give it ago?
Any thoughts?

mtb converting to a tourer?
Hi,
I wish to convert my mtb to a touring cycle with road tyres. Not interested in drop bars though
Can you please advise me of the types of tyres are a good option.
Ive seen some tyres are 26x 1.50 and I wonder if I could use a narrower section?
The bike Im converting is a Carrera Professional made from Reynolds 531 and a Suntour Xc Pro groupset.
Its at least 20 years old but a qualiity machine (I think).
Has anyone done this quickfix?
regards
wilf

Friction lever conversion
Hi,
Can I convert my braze on downtube shifters to modern ergo shifters?
I'm running a 5 speed freewheel with friction levers.
I want to retain the wheels as they are bomb proof using campag super record hubs made by the late ken Bird.
Has anyone done this ?
regards
