Re: Obituaries

I think a simple announcement, forwarded from next-of-kin, has been the practice on this, and other forums, for quite a while now. Let that suffice? Amateur astronomers tend to be an unhealthier lot than cyclists, so I remember, back on the astronomy forums, there was a sad announcement every so oft...

Re: Panic buying, hoarding

I can still remember the days in my childhood when our local Sainsbury's (just an over-the-counter grocer's back then - no supermarkets) used to sell eggs loose in a paper bag. If I was sent out to do the shopping (kids were often sent out on their own back then), I had to be very careful carrying t...

Well, she won't be doing that now, will she! Would you insist rather, that Caroline were cut off from her son for all time? Of course, at the present time everyone has to suffer that.... We have relatives in the USA, and yes: we did take long-haul flights to pay a visit, a few years ago. And they so...

Re: Time on your hands or slow the goddamn threads down thread!!!

We should ban the idle from shops for 4 days a week, including weekends. I'd go along with that idea - to some extent. Perhaps each household should have a designated 'shopping day' - only on that day of the week would they be allowed to go shopping. Help spread the load. Carry a card (or download ...

Re: Panic buying, hoarding

Outside where folk were queuing there appeared to entertain all either Vera Lynn or Gloria from it ain't half hot mum. Vera Lynn is 103. I'm sure she'd love to, but I don't think they're letting her travel to Merseyside to entertain the troops queues, just now! :) As it happens, I've just cycled cl...

Probably 'useless' even to bump this thread.

Maybe there'll be none of us left on 28.3.2021. So the thread won't get 'bumped' any more...

Re: Coronavirus (aka COVID-19) - just how serious?

Just heard from my sister that my youngest niece has tested positive. She works as a doctor in a ward (in London) caring for COVID patients, so it's not really all that surprising. Apparently she's self-isolating, recovering well (she's in her early 30s), and hopes to be back at work next week. Perh...

Re: Panic buying, hoarding

I've just heard from my sister that in her area (north of Leeds) there's plenty of food available because food wholesalers who normally deliver to hotels and restaurants , are overflowing with stock that they can't shift, so they're switching to home deliveries. This must be happening all over the c...

Re: Panic buying, hoarding

Each to their own. The present time not a good reason to change eating habits. It can be. The trail that led us to eventually renounce meat altogether, began with BSE (and the viral* video of John Selwyn Gummer feeding that burger to his daughter...). That was another health scare - but of a differ...

Re: Coronavirus (aka COVID-19) - just how serious?

Certainly 'drive-to-exercise' needs to be clarified: yes or no? I'd imagine, if there is a restriction, it's to stop people driving some distance and converging on a very popular open space, which may well be crowded with other people - and hence make it difficult to observe the two-metre rule. In o...

Re: Panic buying, hoarding

well theres no beef or pork or chicken either in lidl. The lamb chops were a solitary pack I picked up from Aldi 1.5 weeks or so ago. I know this will sound condescending, but isn't this a grand time to switch to vegetarian? OK, I know, I know, even gettin veg. can be a problem. We did fine today, ...

At least it says that (3)For the purposes of paragraph (1), the place where a person is living includes the premises where they live together with any garden, yard, passage, stair, garage, outhouse or other appurtenance of such premises so we can do things in the garden like mow the lawn (yesterday)...

Re: Time on your hands or slow the goddamn threads down thread!!!

I have two (two!) grand daughters who are expert at the card-cheating. It's my own fault as 'twas me wot foolishly suggested that we play bridge with piles of old copper coins as rewards for the points. This stimulated their large cheater-gene (got from their grandmother, nothing to do with moi) .....

Re: Panic buying, hoarding

It's strong flour that isn't brown or wholemeal. Does that answer your question?  No, afraid not, does it have a strong taste or what? :? I was going to put you out of your misery, but Lollykat beat me to it! The 'very strong' wholemeal we get from Waitrose (when they have it!) is ma...

Re: Time on your hands or slow the goddamn threads down thread!!!

Talking of cards.... simply wading through all the E-mails is taking a sizeable chunk of my daily activities. At present the Bridge club I go to (which has of course suspended meetings) is arguing and debating about how to continue playing bridge online. I've had no fewer than twenty-seven E-mails j...
