Re: Undertake or Overtake?

I'm thinking queuing is probably best but dont like the idea of getting gassed behind a car. I can usually keep up with traffic when it's busy but drivers can be really impatient and try to overtake or get annoyed when speed picks up. I suppose every situation is different.

Here, do you think vehicle drivers are as reflective as cyclists?

Undertake or Overtake?

Now that I avoid using ASL's, my daily commute seems a lot less fraught. My next bug bear is whether it is safer to undertake or overtake in heavy and slow moving traffic. I have had bad experiences with both. I was deliberately knocked off my bike whilst crawling up the kerp. The guy got out his car cursing me saying it was against the law to undertake!! When overtaking, I have had cars deliberately move out to the right to prevent me overtaking whilst cars coming the opposite direction deliberately head for you. Paranoid? Moi?

I commute in the West of Scotland where male drivers seem to take it as a personal slur if you under or overtake them on a bike. You know the sort of place. Where men are men!

Rail Companies Letting Down Cyclists

On my commute home, 6 bikes looking to board with 3 spaces only. Thankfully we all got on because there was no jobsworth ticket checker. Two got off at the first stop with another two bikes looking to board. Then the conductor appeared. Thankfully I was one of the ones getting off. My money is on 3 cyclists being ejected and having to wait another hour for a connection. You know it's just going to get worse.

Makes you wonder what is being done to encourage cyclists. I bet the two cyclists who were commuting for the first time wont be back.

No point in complaining as I actually think the rail companies gather complaints as proof of underfunding. No point in speaking to an MP as they will come out with the usual [inappropriate word removed] that funding has never been greater and so much % of millions have been allocated. Blah, bloody , blah.

Re: Top Gear on bikes

I do think they make a good point about public information films. I still remember the "Green Cross Code" and "Charlie says" and "Clunk Click Every Trip" even after all these years.

Re: Top Gear on bikes

"every car has given me at least 6 feet of space"

There's the answer. Get your own film crew.

At least the Beeb took a light hearted approach and didn't try to convince us they are really cyclists.

Why Are We So Far Behind....

...the Dutch, Norwegians et al in terms of cycling infrastructure? What happened for them to invest in providing for cyclists and we didn't. Why did we go a different route?

I tour regularly and no matter how much I promise myself never to take so much stuff I always do. I regularly take the 'bike for a walk'
Absolute mental bombing down hills. :D

Forgot How Great Mud Is...

Got my CX bike and immediately put mudguards, rack and touring tyres on. Spent the last couple of months being bullied by cars to the extent that I'm ready to pack in commuting. Decided to strip down the bike and put on Mavic CX wheels along with Schwalbe CX tyres. What an absolute joy. Covered in mud from top to toe with the biggest grin on the planet. God knows how Im still alive but at least it's my fault and not some buttock in an X5.

Had to smile. A lovely lady made much the same comment to me. I nearly had a heart attack trying to catch her up!

Plain Clothes Police Cyclists

Is there such a thing? Bet they would experience a plethora of crime against cyclists rather than the perfect driving they obviously experience because of their uniform.
