Re: PMs honours: who deserves one?

Did he definitely say that? I was listening and got the impression he said that he didn't give a toss about the opinion of a woman who worked for a domestic violence charity. If so, that's a different thing. It's not pleasant but it's not the same as not giving a toss about domestic violence. He wa...

Re: PMs honours: who deserves one?

Boycott rather confirmed his unfitness by saying he did not "give a toss" about organisations working against domestic violence. I would completely agree. He was found guilty. They had a photo of his girlfriend after the beating and it was not a trivial attack. His attitude stank. Did he ...

Re: PMs honours: who deserves one?

Sir Sean Connery possibly has previous too, he famously said that 'slapping a woman is no big deal', though 40 years later said he was misquoted. But one of his ex-wives alleged domestic violence too, of course that's not a conviction. I don't remember any controversy about that when he was knighted...

Re: PMs honours: who deserves one?

Given the furore over Geoff Boycott l can't say l heard about any other recipients in May's honours. Like him or loathe him l think Boycott made a good point about the inquisitorial legal system in France compared to the accusatorial system here. If the investigating magistrate found Boycott abrasiv...

Re: Rebecca Twigg

The rate of service pension also (and pretty obviously) depends on rank as well as length of service. So the pension a corporal gets is less than that of a sergeant major. And the pension either gets will not (unless they live the most frugal of lives) be enough to retire on, especially as at age 40...

Re: Would you ever phone up Any Answers?

Going back on thread I see only one person has said they would ring Any Answers. I haven't voted (never trust polls) but l been to both QT and AQ, asked a question on QT and wrote a question for AQ which didn't get selected (though the topic did). It's odd that so so many with forthright opinions on...

She said she could never (or would never) be friends with a Tory. Which in a way is unremarkable if just work colleagues but what about the rest of life from women you might meet at an ante natal class to a couple on the same holiday to your Uncle Derek?

Re: Would you ever phone up Any Answers?

Often the BBC puts two journos of opposite politics together repeatedly so they become kind of friends with a load of in jokes and subtext to what they say that viewers probably don't get since they don't know them. Yes, it's true of politicians too. Many have friendships or relationships that tran...

Re: Would you ever phone up Any Answers?

That's why i don't listen to then, they're pointless for information and I don't find listening to idiots spouting rubbish works as entertainment for me. Not always. On Any Answers sometimes a caller is a cardio-thoracic surgeon when the subject is smoking related heath or was stationed in Nothern ...

Re: Northumberland National Park

We stuck to minor roads and used the NCN routes 10, 72 and 68 as well as local cycle routes extensively. We also found a lovely little road/track that takes you from Wark up onto Ward Lane. We found a lovely café in Simonburn which was a Godsend. Most of the rides were very hilly as we went from on...

Re: It woz the Conservatives/the rich wot done it!

It's nice & easy to reduce every subject matter to a binary "It's this or that" answer. But the world, including the world of human ideas and behaviours, is far more complex - a series of analogue scales with many intersecting dimensions. "Left & right" as labels of poli...

Re: Education

You don't have to google far to find there are private tutors in Finland which must mean some parents feel the education system is not doing enough for their kids. It reminds me of an anecdote recounted by Billy Bragg in a book about touring in the Soviet Union. In their party of four left-leaning B...

Re: Auferstanden aus Ruinen - we love Germany!

1989 is the year to remember now, Plus One! I was discomfited to read that the Polish regime recently urged the Germans to spend even more on 'defence' There's been a remembrance ceremony for the start of WW2 in Poland today (only started on 3rd September for us while we awaited on an ultimatum for...

Re: Would you ever phone up Any Answers?

I've not heard Any Answers, but in general these types of programs don't interest me. A bit like when news reports start stopping people in the street and ask them what they think about something - getting an opinion from one or 2 probably not even random people is irrelevant and just fills-up broa...

Re: How many makes a successful protest?

It reminded me of when my colleague and I were sat outside a pub in Westminster. He was watching supposedly a live broadcast showing the number of protesters. The pub was indeed hidden behind throngs of people - strange we were sat outside watching the world go by and unable to see those thousands ...
