Re: Unscrewing a 3 speed cyclo sprocket?

Sounds like you have got it cracked. I have checked my 30's Cyclo catalogues( I wrote the article referred to earlier in this thread) and don't think this is made by Cyclo theirs uses a 2 dog remover maybe its a Villiers. Yes the only way is to use chainwhips and you should find by getting the middle sprocket off there will be a couple of flats which enable you to remove the remaining parts ( by using a vice ). I have seen versions of these freewheels where the largest sprocket was a left hand thread and you need to get that off as well.

Nothing new under the Sun department, Cyclo sold a freehub in the 30's, model tank sprockets were fixed wheel type

Re: Saddle Bag Support

what a great post !! until recently Carradice made an alloy bag support which clamped to the seat stays and a wire tensioned around the seat pin
Personally I have never found bag supports effective for anything but the lightest loads . Using a light carrier eg a Blackburn is not much more weight and in my view the best solution to supporting a Camper or Nelson. The former has the alloy rings to attach a cape etc and the Nelson does not rather it has a a tunnel for putting a toestrap etc through.

I recently researched the history of Carradice for the VCC its on their online library or if you are not a member i can email a copy send an email to steve.y.griffith AT royalmail.com

Re: Tubs and punctures

A few advantages of tubs:
1) You can ride home on a flat tube without damaging the rim
2) Tub rims are far stronger and durable than the comparable lightweight rim. What price rims that wont even last the life of a tyre !!!
3) if you puncture going down hill very fast the tub will not roll off . One reasons why they are still used in the Tour
4) they are dirt cheap at jumbles etc I got a Campag hub on a Mavic sprint recently for a five . same seller was offering Campag hubs on there own for 15 quid !!!!

I use the cheapest of tubs Vittoria rally at present , kelvar protected last about 1000 miles . Haven't the patience to repair there was someone doing repair who advertised in Cycling Weakly but the cost of repair was equal to buying a new one .
I carry the doubled sided tape , Velox is not so good as its paper backed which tears when fitting try and find the plastic backed taped , would never mess around on the road with glue which needs 24 hours to set anyway

Wanted needle bearing for Stronglight bb

Re: Bottle dynamos

Whilst carrying out research for the VCC on dynamos I tested a number both ancient eg Lucifer, Lucas and modern eg Axa and Nordlicht and Soubitez.
A good source of bottle dynamos is a jumble they are usualy dirt cheap apart fromr the ones that have acquired status eg the grossly over rated French Jos.

Of the modern ones the Nordlicht I find great at first but then it starts slipping in any less than perfect conditions , even with the larger ruber pulley fitted. I thin tried the metal pulley no better.

Axa I found excellent but had trouble with their front lights maybe the electrics are subject to damp causing a short circuit not sure . Early axa suffered bearing failures but the later ones are to be OK. I like their real light with the battery back up Spa used to do these

I am currently using a Lucifer Baby 900 late 60's model with a B and M front halogen superb. Lucifers work best with the rubber pulley silent work under all but the most slippery/icy conditions.

The Soubitex /Cibie ones are the lightest and generally work OK

So get an old Lucifer 800 series are goodthe 900 superb . I also like the Siluma whihc were also Swiss made in the 70;s

Re: Simplex front mech i.d?

this is the first version the Simplex Prestige more usually found with black plastic. Your version dates from the early 1960's. Its bottom pull and actually works quite well but after prolonged use the plastic tends to crack. It only has one adjusting screw the other adjustment is made by unscrewing the samll bolt and laterally moving the cage - fiddly! .

Re: Campagnolo 52 su date stamp?

re the Stronglight 100 LX all you need to convert to a triple is a the longer chainring bolts all 3 rings it onthe same PCD You can go down to 28 t . Try Spa cycles they have this kind of stuff and the rings . Worth paying more the dural rings they last alot longer

Your Campag hub If its running a six speed al that may have happened is that someone has put on a longer axle there is no such thing as a five or six speed screw on hub merely axle length and spacing difference.
The number on the inside of the locknut is usually the year for older campag hubs. Couple of suggestions could the five be an 8?. Could the locknut have been changes and finally if it is 52 its likely to be made by FB who did campag's hubs at this time, they stamped the cones the year and FB so check the cones.

Re: carlton drop outs

a Carlton of that era would almost certainly be built for 27" wheels. Also probabaly the drop outs were for solid hubs which have thinner diameter axles than qucik release. Quality control was pretty poor on Carltons and other massed produced bikes of the era so that probably how you ended up with odd diameter drop outs . Main thing is does the wheel operate OK ie if its doesn't pull over under load then no problem

Re: Favourite tea shops the NW

a few other recommendations based on information from RSF ( Rouhg Stuff fellowship ) members and own experience of the area:

OS 102 Preston and Blackpool : cafe on farm just west of Inslip at 460393 open Thursday to sun from 1200 to about 1630; superb like sitting in someone front parlour

Pilling , cafe in centre of village massive portions you will not leave here hungry

OS103 Blackburn

Abbots Retreat, West Marton : about 6 miles west of Skipton on canal which at this point has the Pennine Way running beside it. Very friendly and open most days . Check out the double decker bridge and the tow path to Bank Newton

Waddington , Country Kitchen only 2 miles from Clitheroe 729 438

Dunsop Bridge ( the centre of the UK) cafe is excelent but even better on Sunday afternoons the village hall at 713 21 cakes cut to 90 degree slices!!!

If you want something a bit more upmarket try Bashall Barn 713 421 just west of Waddington in Bashall Town

Re: Upgrade of Major Nichols cycle

the only suntour rear mech that works backwards was the 1960's skitter all other suntour mech work normally ie rest on lever is small cog on rear.

Quite a few suntour mech works in reverse to normal ie lever in rest chain is on large chainwheel this includes Compe V NSL SL and quite few others

Should work with any set of levers

As for a down tube double I have one pm your adress and I'll send it
