Re: What's happened to the famous "Bristol Biggest Bike Ride

Of course it's budget cuts -Someone has to organise publicity, website, registration, signage etc

add to that insurance + paying the police + paying for the bollards to be put out etc etc etc.
Nothing costs nothing.

Re: What's happened to the famous "Bristol Biggest Bike Ride

what has happened to the famous BRISTOL BIGGEST BIKE RIDE in 2015?

The answer most probably will be budget cuts
I used to marshal a section of one of the rides many years ago. Then when my son was a baby I used to take him on the middle length ride - (he's now 18!).
It was a great event - having 3 options of ride meant that there was something for everyone and a real carnival atmosphere at the end.
It's a shame to have it replaced with one 4 mile ride but as I say, councils are having massive cuts in their budgets and a whole lot more to come :(
funding for events like this will soon be a fond memory of better times.

Re: When do locks become overkill?

I hate people that leave the locks behind, that is say this is my place so FO what right have you, I'm really glad you lost your locks next time take them with you.

Wow! That seems quite an aggressive outburst for this forum. I always leave my locks behind - they probably weigh more than my bike!. They are currently attached to some railings outside a pub in Bristol. I will pick them up on Monday morning on my way to work - always assuming some angry cyclist hasn't sawn them off and thrown them in the docks :D

Recipe for a perfect sundae

ingredients : 1 nice bike. I always think home made is best. You can build this ahead of time and store in a cool shed.
When the weather is fine set your Garmin to country lanes. While it is loading fill a bidon with fresh water, add a few pumps of air to your tyres and there you have it.
You are now ready to make a perfect Sunday :D

Re: mobile charger for iPhone

you need min 10000mha
- that makes 10 amps !!! are you trying to charge it up or weld it? :?
I used to have a Lithium Ion battery powering my lights and permanently fixed to the bike. I ran a cable through a 5v voltage regulator which then charged my phone and could keep the Satnav app running for over 8 hours.
incidentally, iphones will draw up to 1amp if plugged into the mains but only 500mA if connected to a d.c. supply.

Re: correct torque for carbon forks

Thanks for the advice above.
I did contact the manufacturer (Kinesis) as the frame and forks are brand new. They replied
Maximum is 8nm, we normally recommend 6-8nm

correct torque for carbon forks

Can anyone advise me on the correct torque when tightening an expanding stopper in a carbon steering tube?
similar design to this one.
It has to be held firm enough to allow for the pre-load to be added to the bearings but not too tight
ie: tighten until you hear a crack and then back off by 1/8th :)

my bike's been stolen - Bristol

Can I ask that anyone around the Bristol area to keep a lookout for a Whyte Charing Cross with black mudguards and rack, a round mirror mounted on the handlebars, Mavic Open Pro rims, Hope Pro evo hub on the front, White industries CX11 hub on rear, Ultegra 6800 chainset and Shimano RS785 hydraulic disc callipers. I have reported it to the police. I can't tell you how gutted I am feeling.

Re: ASL and motorcyclists

I too ride a motorcycle (2days commute on the motorbike and 3 days bicycle) I think I can safely say that I am the only motorcyclist in Bristol who respects ASL and only use them when on my bicycle not the motorbike. ASL's are there for the safety of cyclist's not the convenience of motorcyclists.

Spinning ????

Can someone explain exactly what Spinning is? Not the exercise classes at the gym but the method of pedalling - if that's what it is.
Cheers :?

Re: news paper nutcase

martinn - would this be the same free rag that recently carried the letter and subsequent predictable replies about a father riding to school with his kids and being told to ride on the cycle path?

Yes indeed it is that pinnacle of journalism - The North Somerset Times. They have woken up to the fact that as well as moaning about North Somerset Council, cyclists offer a rich vein of vitriol from the readership too.
I have started drafting a reply but I keep straying into Mr Angry territory  so I have to put it away and think pleasant thoughts until I can continue. I will manage it eventually with the help of many of the suggestions above.

news paper nutcase

My local free-sheet arrived today and in the letters column was this :-
I would like to address all cyclists in the area and advise them of the dangers of using flashing lights on their bikes. Flashing lights such as those available for bicycles can cause many reactions to those of us unfortunate enough to come across them. Epileptic fits, migraines, dizziness and disorientation can all be triggered by these lights. It is extremely frightening and unpleasant to find yourself unable to see whilst at the wheel of a car all because a cyclist has gone by with a flashing light. I implore any cyclist reading this to think about other road users and pedestrians before they turn their lights to the flashing setting, especially during the daylight hours. It can cause accidents.
I am in two minds about whether to respond to this or to ignore the anti-cycling, inaccurate garbage that this letter represents. After all, nonsense like this is printed purely to spark a reaction. So - what should I do? Please submit your suggestions :)
