Re: Venice to Nice via Switzerland

Thanks for the answers, just what I needed☺:-) Will definitely look at all the routes. BTW, we did carry our luggage last year but traveled light and stayed in hotels. Will have the same bike and pack list this year so fingers crossed will be ok. The most cols I've done in a day is 6 on the Raid Alp...

Venice to Nice via Switzerland

HI I'm cycling between Venice and Nice via Switzerland, and wondered if anyone had any experience or opinions on the route below, in particular whether bikes are allowed on all these roads. The hotels are booked, but I may swap a couple out at the end and come in via The Alps rather than the coast -...

Re: Italy/Garda and the ~500 miles to get there, paths, GRs

Forgot to mention, they mostly spoke German in the north rather than Italian. We stayed in the Hotel Sonnof in Innsbruck that was excellent. Please feelvfree to message me if you need any further details. I have also cycled to Italy before now from the UK, but came in via Monte Carlo, and will be do...

Re: Italy/Garda and the ~500 miles to get there, paths, GRs

Hi I cycled top to bottom of Italy in September from Innsbruck to the toe, we cycled over the Brenner Pass. At the top of the Brenner Pass there was an excellent cycle path that went the whole way to Garda. The Brenner Pass is only a short distance from Innsbruck

Re: Ammonia/protein/ketosis

A lot of ultra endurance athletes in the states are training their bodies to be fat adapted (ketosis) as this is the state where the body is burning fat for energy. They are doing this both to lose body fat and/or to access the fat stores for energy. The amount of energy that the body can store as g...

Re: Money and long-distance touring

I use a Post Office credit card when travelliing due to the low costs when using abroad. It can also be managed via the internet. I take one MasterCard, one Visa and a debit card. I swap one card with a friend in case one of us is mugged or robbed and keep all three in different places. I also keep ...

Re: tuscany accommodation concern

I cycled end to end of Italy last year, and cycling from Venice to Nice via Switzerland this year. For both tours I used booking.com and have got some great deals. Averaged about 35 euro per night with breakfast and had some fantastic hotels.

Re: Google Maps Offline, How?

I normally take a couple of different maps/apps on a couple of different devices as a backup, just in case one runs out of charge or fails. Also, if I'm travelling with someone then we both do the same. Haven't used paper maps for years!

Re: Vegetarian Touring

Hi, with regards to the vitamin and mineral, it's a bit trial and error to find what suits you - what you can tolerate, what seems to make a difference. Optimum Nutrition by Patrick Holford is a good book if you have time to read it and will help you work out which minerals or vitamins you may be la...

Re: Vegetarian Touring

Hi, I'm a veggie tourer and haven't had any problems in Western Europe (France, Spain, Italy, Austria or Switzerland). I use yogurt and milk drinks to make I keep my protein supplies topped up, as well as the normal sources such as cheese and eggs. Try swapping your coffee for Latte or Cappuchino. I...

Re: Raid Alpine unsupported

Thanks for the reply. The costs with and without support are not looking too far apart, so I may do a supported trip for the extra piece of mind and ease of organising

Raid Corsica and Raid Pyrennes

I would like to do the Raid of Corsica and Raid Pyrennes in 2014, but may not use a tour company.

Does anyone know how I get the route (GPX or TCX) and also how I officially enter?

Re: Raid Alpine unsupported

Where did you get your route for the Raid Pyrennes? A GPX or TCX route would be great. I'm think of using Bordeaux and Barcelona as the start and end points as these are the easiest place for me to fly in and out of

Re: Raid Alpine unsupported

I did it supported in 2012. Great ride. Would think it would be tough with luggage though. Some days are long. I'm planning to do Raid Pyrennes in 2014 maybe unsupported but will travel v light
