So that's what it's called! I've suffered from this for years, though mainly after hill walking/running, when I haven't been on the hills for a while. Never had it as a result of cycling though.

Close pass policing

Has anything like this been done in other areas of the country? https://www.johnogroat-journal.co.uk/news/drivers-spoken-to-in-wick-cycle-operation-210308/

It's hardly a major outing. If you can't decide then do both.

Exactly. Simply a deterrent to people actually taking responsibility for getting themselves out of trouble.

Re: BBC: War on Two Wheels

Just listened to this, very entertaining. Still available for the next year on BBC website. Lois is great, met her briefly a few years ago when she gave a talk at my mountaineering (!) club dinner.

I had to laugh out loud at her description of the Danish Cycling Ambassador's quote "Why would they? [i.e. European cyclists buy designer clothing] They already own trousers!" . I have a lot of sympathy with this view. It has always puzzled me why so many of my fellow cyclists, at great expense, choose to attire themselves like Spiderman.

Horrendous video of cyclist being wiped out

This may have been seen before as the video in this article is of a different incident than the one the article refers to. But pretty horrible anyway. https://www.newhamrecorder.co.uk/news/jay-kristiansen-cyclist-dies-1-6764218

Alternatively the nearby climb of Blaze Hill out of Bollington is good, and slightly more strenuous.

If you are walking then you are considered a pedestrian, same as if you are pushing your bike along a pavement/shopping precinct/etc.

Re: Average speeds for women

You can find a list of 'standard' times for various distances for age 40+ here. Obviously this is aimed at people who are competing in time trials, so may be quite a bit faster than what you are used to, but it's interesting anyway. Something to aspire to if you are that way inclined, but don't let it put you off!

When coming up behind a slower rider, I take a deep breath about 30m behind them, then sprint, holding my breath, until I pass them. I suspect this may be a bit over the top, but at least it is decent interval training!

That is totally unnecessary. There is next to zero chance of passing on or catching virus from such a fleeting 'contact' .

The same applies to pedestrians who step off the pavement into the road when passing other pedestrians. Very dangerous. But if getting too close still worries you then just take a deep breath and hold it for few seconds until you're well past them.

Re: Heels hitting chainstay and frame

I also have this problem if I cycle in running shoes - however you don't need to fork out for cycling shoes. About four years ago I got a pair of Lonsdale Fulham trainers, a lot narrower than ordinary running shoes and ideal for cycling. Cost about £20 at Sports Direct. I wold not recommend them for running however as they don't offer any shock absorption.

The current version of this shoe on Sports Direct website is different from the one I have, so probably worth checking that it still narrower than your trainers.

It's a tough problem.

Along with many other people I'm very concerned about the dominance of the food industry, the prevalence of obesity, and the importance of preventative healthcare as well as the management of illness.

And when we finally manage to make a coordinated change based on the evidence of what works... "it's the nanny state".

Well, it pre-supposes that people are not capable of making sensible lifestyle choices. Which, I'll grant you, may be the case for many people.
