Re: I'm pushing each training session to my FTP
Surely riding the same local routes can't be as boring as sitting on a training machine?

Re: Vitamin D - how much?
I avoid exposure to direct sunlight as much as possible, as I am a very fair complexion and burn easily. That doesn't mean staying indoors, but covering up as appropriate with clothing and sunblock.
Ever since childhood I have taken 10ml cod liver oil a day (a habit instilled by my mother) and it seems to do the trick. The one I use proclaims 200% NRV for vitamin D.

I must disagree I wouldn't ride any distance without clipless pedals!
Sliding around in platform pedslst isn't my idea of fun!
I'm sure others agree. However a close friend of mine has knee trouble and rides without clipless or clips on fast road bikes.
Cheers James
Your feet don't slide around with a toe cage.

Re: Too many patches
Bmblbzzz wrote:My suggestion to the OP would be not to patch at the roadside (unless it's your last tube and there's no chance to beg, borrow, buy or steal another, of course). Just put a spare tube in. Take punctured tubes home and mend them there, in bulk. That way you get to do it in more comfortable conditions and use up more of the glue in one go.
That depends whether you have found where the puncture is. If you just put in a new tube you risk getting that punctured as well if you haven't removed the offending thorn/piece of glass/metal or whatever from the tyre. Sometimes it's not obvious where it is and the only way to find it is to put the tube underwater, to give you an approximate location where to look on the tyre. By the time you've done all that you might as well patch it. By far the most time spent on fixing punctures is removing and re-installing the tyre.
But there is no need for the OP to buy a new kit. Patches and rubber solution can both be bought separately.

I'm surprised no-one has suggested a simple rucksack. I've never used anything else. Beats messing about with panniers any day.

That's brilliant. It cud (!) be further improved by using 'quay' instead of 'key' and 'putt' instead of 'put'!

Found the embedded thorn and prised it out followed by the hiss of the air coming out. So it was well worth leaving it in, if I had pulled the whole twig out I would have had to mend it roadside. I have had a few like this with marathon plus, they seem to be able to hold the thorn and keep the air in ?
Yes this is a good tip. I discovered this to my cost many years ago when I picked up a thorn. The tyre didn't go down, so I stopped and pulled it out, in the belief that this would stop it working its way through the tyre. Big mistake!

What about base layers with long sleeves - I have a very old (30+ years) Helly Hansen vest which is perfect, but could do with a couple extra. Good for keeping the wrists warm this time of year.

If you feel safer on the road, then use it. Let's face it, there is a vanishingly small percentage of roads where any kind of cyclepath exists, so most of the time we are using the road anyway. Frustrated motorists should be the least of our worries.

Re: 2020 Tour de France
It will be a minor miracle if none of the riders contract Covid-19 following the ascent of the Peyresourde. The behaviour of the crowds on some of the climbs is appalling at the best of times, but the fact they were even allowed to be there this year beggars belief.
