Re: Route complete - comments??

Thanks, Bicycler, we'll stick with the Lune Estuary Path and hopefully be able to follow the bicycle routes through Preston and Lancaster. Redvee, I got much of my routing to the Severn Bridge from your "bridge to bridge" route on rwgps - thank you! Had not realized we could ride on either...

Route complete - comments??

Below are the rwgps files for our 21 Stage, 1,056 mile LEJOG, starting June 8th. I’m so grateful for all the tips (and entire routes) that I’ve used from Forum members, but would so appreciate any further comments and suggestions. Generally, we’re looking to minimize hills while staying off busy roa...

Re: Ctc plastic bags - Ryanair

I second using the shop mentioned above, Bicycletas Velocipedo (http://elvelocipedo.com/Velocipedo/Ingles/Velo_ServiciosI.html). When we rode the Camino in 2007, we used them to pack our bikes (in sturdy new cardboard boxes imprinted with their names). We stopped on our way into Santigo on arrival t...

Re: Seeking comments on planned route

Thanks, cycloret. I've modified my Bettyhill-Dunnet Head-JOG route to leave Dunnet Head by the route you used through Brough. I haven't spent as much time on the routes through Scotland and they still need a bit of attention! Appreciate your bringing this to my attention, and I've enjoyed reading yo...

Re: Seeking comments on planned route

Greg, Thanks for your comments. I'm still working away on "perfecting" our routes, though most of our hotels are booked now. Good to know to skip Dunnett Head if it's foggy; and I've been planning to visit Duncansby Head the day after JOG, when we go to Wick (hoping to get train tickets wi...

Re: Train issues at both ends of LEJOG

Thanks everyone for the suggestions – I’d have never thought of flying or of MickF’s bike bag suggestion. We had discarded the idea of car hire due to the time it would take and wanting to relax rather than be stressed about driving on the “wrong” side of the road safely back to London. We have tick...

Re: Train issues at both ends of LEJOG

Thanks, Chris, I hope you are right about the Cornwall train situation! Coudn't find where I'd read 4 bikes on the train from Wick, but just went on the Scot Rail website and tried to book 4 people and 4 bikes next week on the train and it went though fine... of course I stopped short of entering my...

Train issues at both ends of LEJOG

I'm trying to work out some train details for our June LEJOG: Returning to London: I’m looking at leaving Wick on the 6:20 am train, assuming I can get bike reservations. The train change in Inverness is only 10 minutes (arrives 10:35 and departs for Edinburgh at 10:45). I’m worried this will not be...

Re: where to stay at John O' Groats

I have booked four of us into the Seaview Hotel at the end of June when we complete our LEJOG. We've booked the £40 per person B&B rate, but we were quoted the bunkhouse at £25 per person as available also. They do have a garage for bike storage overnight. In general, we're paying £30-40 per per...

Re: Penzance train disruption for LEJoGers?

So appreciate reading the local opinions on the flooding and train problems. Four of us are planning to take the train from London to Penzance on June 7th, but now not so sure this will be possible; I'll be following closely what you have to say! We have most of our hotels booked, and will find a wa...

Re: Cycle-friendly accomodations for London, Edinburgh

Thanks, irc. I'm planning to book train & bike reservations on-line with eastcoast. I went almost through the process the other day just to check if they would take a US credit card, and it looks like that won't be a problem at all. I've got my calendar marked ahead of the time I expect we can b...

Cycle-friendly accomodations for London, Edinburgh

Our LEJOG route for June 2014 is pretty well set, so it’s time to start making hotel and B&B reservations. We’re flying from the USA, and will spend 2 nights in London before leaving Paddington Station for Penzance. Would like to find a place to stay near Paddington that would store our bike box...

Re: Seeking comments on planned route

Thanks for the input. I’m going to do what LollyKat suggests – load several routes between Inverness and Lairg (Struie or not) on the Garmin and decide that day. No camping gear for us – we expect have reservations at B&B’s for each night, so will be able to keep the weight of our panniers down....

Re: Seeking comments on planned route

OK, I’m a bit taken aback at seeing the climb into Tomintoul on the 10 Top British climbs! Looking for an easier alternative to our Perth to Inverness route (3 days for us currently stopping at Braemar & Grantown-on-Spey), I’ve found GregLR’s route ( http://www.gnte2emaps.blogspot.com/ Stages 18...

Re: Seeking comments on planned route

Thanks, irc and ScotchEgg. I switched us to the B9006 from Culloden Battlefield to Inverness. Adds 1.8 miles, but expect it will still be faster than the NCN 7 with all its turns.
