Re: Dropped seat stays - good bad or ugly?!

Am I the only person to worry about the top tube stretching? Is it made out of toffee? I don't get that either - I can see how the lower frame flexes, but stretch? It would make sense if the top tube was curved, then it would straighten, but it's not, it's straight. Still, I expect they know what t...

Re: Mountain bike commuting

I think Big Bens and Big Apples are basically the same tyre, the surface on the Big Ben is textured but I don't think it makes a difference. All I know is, I got the cheaper version of the 26" Big Apple for about a tenner at SJS and it was a puncture magnet. Ditched them when they were half wor...

Re: Mountain bike commuting

For the 27.5" wheel size it would be Big Bens rather than Big Apples - Schwalbe don't make Big Apples in that size, although Big Bens are just the virtually identical equivalent. They still have some tread but they're almost slick and quite fast rolling, although they won't grip well on mud if ...

Re: Dropped seat stays - good bad or ugly?!

Of course what we should consider when discussing the merits of such a design is that from a manufacturers point of view long life is irrelevant. Not just bikes. Almost everything. Same for many buyers. Therefore to see it as a problem is largely pointless as to most it doesn't matter. Of course it...

....Jeff Jones is a genius, although I read an interview where he said, "All the best info is pre-1930s" - he's apparently a great student of bicycle history and he's just applying principles that were known and established a long time ago. Whatever your leanings, it's seriously worth wat...

... and it's quite likely that Annemiek won DESPITE having to ride with a ridiculous new frame design. Win on Sunday, sell on Monday... Well, considering she was up out of the saddle on every incline, every slope, every hill, far more than her competitors, and for longer, at least as far as I could...

Re: Dropped seat stays - good bad or ugly?!

I see that frame as just a joke - gimmick for the sake of gimmick - not the rational, structural logic of the classic double triangle frame. Each to their own though. This is the same principle, though, at the front anyway (you might recognise the bike as Jan Heine's).: EPLNR_0x-L8 Or if you want t...

Re: Dropped seat stays - good bad or ugly?!

Funnily enough, I came across this late last night - an animation of rear frame flex as a result of the dropped seat stays on the current Scott Foil. 1_x2fduEuYJVRfWdtl3b4pYQ.gif https://medium.bikehugger.com/scott-foil-smart-and-fast-84d4acd5ff9d Apparently the last Foil gave an awful harsh ride; ...

Re: Dropped seat stays - good bad or ugly?!

From a comfort point of view, they are superb, in my experience, they break the shock pathway up, between the wheel and the seat post to your spine, they also help with aero, and given that you spend 80% of your effort moving air out of your way, whilst cycling, every little helps. They do make the...

Raleigh 'special edition' police bike ad from 1933. Raleigh police bike ad 1933.jpg The blurb reads: Always ready for duty - fit for any undertaking, however rough - good for its "twenty-six years service", and then still as reliable as ever - the RALEIGH is indeed an indispensable member ...

This was in the Guardian just yesterday - kids in downtrodden areas of Colombia using gravity biking as a means of self expression and a way of escaping their troubles. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2019/oct/02/we-live-for-gravity-biking-deadly-sport-is-way-of-life-in-medellin In answer to Pete...
