Re: Which bikes?

Thank you everyone who responded, a lot of term googling for me I think, it's quite daunting so I'm glad we've started thinking about it early. Someone else gave us advice to go for second hand for quality/value so that's an option too.
Thanks again

Which bikes?

Hi all,

My husband and I are looking at buying new bikes- neither of has has cycled properly since our teens, we visit family in holland often and cycle there but that's a whole different ball game- cyclists rule the roads over there!

Anyway, we've already been given the advice to properly do our research and not buy something on offer from halfords just for the sake of it so this is me doing the research.

We'd be mainly cycling off-road on Scotland's disused railway lines and cycle tracks as our daughter would be cycling her bike with us. We'd also have a baby on the back of one of the bikes from early next year- he'll be one in February and I wouldn't intend cycling with him before this.

So off-road/leisure cycling is the only cycling I'm likely to be doing for a good few years and therefore I probably don't need a hugely high-spec bike, just something comfortable and that's going to last.

My husband plans to start cycling to and from work- only 4/5 miles round trip so this may mean he needs a higher spec bike.

It would be useful for both of us to be able to ride both bikes and I would rather have a gents style one anyway- I'm 5'10 and hubby is 6'2" so I don't know if this is entirely practical but it would be handy to just be able to adjust the seat quickly.

We'd hope to spend no more than £1000 between the bikes and less if possible but again not for the sake of getting something that won't last.

Any advice at all at this stage would be most gratefully received.
