Re: Saddle "Discomfort" - Plough On or Change

You can buy padded cycle shorts which provide great comfort, I use them and rate them highly.

Adjusting gears advice

I've just changed to a new freewheel after the old one broke and even though the new freewheel is pretty much identical some of the gears aren't quite right with the transition up and down. The gears which work fine with no problem are 1, 5, 6, 7 leaving 2, 3 and 4. I have never tweaked gears before so thought best to seek advice :) I know its the screws you adjust, but which screw would adjust those 3 gears?

Would this freeweheel...

Does anyone know if this freewheel would fit a 700c wheel? I'm thinking of getting it for the hill gear as there are a lot of hills around here and making them easier would save me time. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Shimano-Fwheel- ... e+cassette

Re: How to remove a stubborn cassette?

Brucey wrote:I usually hold the cassette tool in the wheel using the QR skewer, so it can't easily pop out.

I then put the tool in a bench vice.

I then use a pair of chain whips on the cassette.

My chain whips are each nearly two feet long.

If this does not work (and in fairness it has yet to fail..... ) then I'd suggest that you get the angle grinder out and simply grind away the lockring until the cassette is loose. Once the tension is off it, I'd expect you to be able to undo the lockring remains OK.

cheers
Angle grinder is looking likely ;)

I don't know what is broken, so I'm just replacing the freewheel and the cassette as I have spares. The problem is when I try to peddle forward it doesn't bite and gives the feeling as if you peddled the cranks backwards.

How to remove a stubborn cassette?

Right my cassette has broken, I did purge it and it worked for a couple of weeks but to day it has completely broke. I have the cassette removal tool and a chain whip, but we can not get the cassette bolt to loosen at all! 3 people have tried now and it is not budging. Has anyone here got any suggestions?

Thanks, i'm going to go try a few of the suggestions right now. I was actually thinking in was the cranks as I've never had a fault like this before.

I used a kitchen discaler before to remove marks like that and even rust, works a treat!

Developed a fault whilst riding!

Something has broken or isn't quite right on my bike :( today whilst riding to work, I was stopped at traffic lights and as I went to peddle off I couldn't. The bike just peddled forward as if you were peddling backwards, If this makes sense? I got it going again, but all along my journey it just kept doing this. There was no sounds of anything breaking, the chain was on correctly and tension was fine.

Never judge a book just by its cover. There are many people out there with very little experience but riding fancy kit because they can afford stuff they've read about on the internet or in cycling magazines. An example - last winter I was told be a pair of riders, both riding quite good kit, that roadwork traffic lights do not apply to cyclists

So if I ride resonably on this path I won't get in trouble? I'm saying this because a colleague of mine who was stuck on the same road arrived 45mins late for work and the roadworks are due to last 10 days and I don't want to be stuck in traffic for ages.

Reflective jacket with bike image?

Last night riding home, a cyclist in front of me had the most amazing reflective jacket. On the back of it was a bright green bike image and underneath the reflective image it had 4 red arrows pointing right. In terms of safety at night this jacket is outstanding, any car could tell its a cyclist from a long way off! I have searched the net but can't find it or anything similar. Does anybody know this jacket? I want one :)

Can you ride on the footpath next to an A road?

Today I was riding to work and the A road I go along was gridlocked because of road works reducing the road at 1 section to 1 lane with lights. There is no cycle lane on this road and I saw 5 other cyclists go on the path to clear all the traffic, so I followed suit. I asked another cyclist who was on the path if this was legal, and he told me that next to a busy congested A road cyclists are allowed to use the footpath but have to be at a slow speed to avoid a collision with a pedestrian. Is this true? By his cycle gear and very expensive bike, he was a very experienced cyclist so I kind of believe it is true.

A4 London road, Bath.

This has to be the most ridiculous cycle lane I have ever seen in all my miles of cycling. Today, whilst visiting friends we decided to take a short cycle from Castle Coombe to Bath. We decided to take what my friend calls the scenic route, which has some stunning views across the valley. As we got into Bath just passed the bypass, we cycled along the bus lane past all the traffic which I thought was very good. As we got to the end of the bus lane, you then re-enter traffic for 100yds and onto the path, which is half pedestrian and half cycle path. The cycle path then ends at the traffic lights and you rejoin the traffic, as you turn left to go across the bridge, there is a 20ft section of cycle lane. This is the most stupid cycle lane ever because, and this is no joke, the 20ft section of lane runs along the back of car parking spaces and as we rode along a car reversed out nearly taking us down. The driver was very apologetic and said she couldn't see us coming because of the other parked cars. The cycle lane then ends just at the start of the bridge, where the road narrows and there is no room for you to merge in with the traffic.

Bike damaged by hole in the road

Recently I upgraded my road bike for a second hand Bianchi nirone xenon, bought for £550.00. The bike was in excellent condition and rode so well. Anyway, this morning whilst riding to work I was going down a hill, the speed on my speedo was 34.2mph when I hit a hole in the road that must of appeared overnight. It wasn't a pothole, it was where the road gad been dug up for a pipe and obviously not repaired properly. It was the width length of the road and measured 6 inches wide, 4 inches deep with what appeared to be chippings as filling.

I saw it but couldn't stop in time and hit it so hard, my backend catapulted up in the air and I went over the bars. My injuries are only scrapes and bruising which is lucky but the bike is in a bad way. The frame is buckled at the back, both wheels are damaged and the handle bars, shifters and headset are ruined from where the bike continued to bounce down the hill. I have taken pictures of the hole and 3 people witnessed it, who I must thank for how amazingly they helped me, including the old guy who took me into his house to dry off, clean up and gave me a cuppa. Now my question is, can I bill the council for the damage to my bike? Because this accident is not my fault in any way.
