Re: GOSHAWK?

That's the place , opposite the houses at the bottom of the hill, I think I only spotted it because the afternoon sun was behind it and I was crawling along, I've only ever seen two other Owls in my life and that was at night, so it was a bit of a moment for me. I took the picture from the opposite side of the road, hence the fuzzy image, here's one of the original shots, it certainly is little, they weren't wrong.

Re: GOSHAWK?

Not quite what you were looking for , but I spotted this Little Owl whilst labouring up Old Pool Bank at the start of December, only about 6 to 8 inches tall amazing what you see when there are no leaves on the trees and you cycle slow enough.

Re: Leg position on descents

Moodyman thanks and to every one else who's replied. I think I've read about that increasing grip thing, is that true do you think or are you just sort of steadying yourself against the camber?

Re: Leg position on descents

Well I just came back from my research mission ,
P1040182 (640x450).jpg
and found I'm not a 9.15er after all I'm bout a 9.18er as I hook the Knee of my right leg slightly below the crossbar,I think this is because I have my seat slightly too low,( for getting on and off a bit easier round town). If I lift off the saddle to the virtual correct seat position, my knees come back to their natural 9.15 home. That might be a good way of checking frame size for me, Level Knee on Top tube, LKOTT, it doesnt quite have the same ring as KOPS tho'!

Re: Leg position on descents

Mick I think the forces on the bottom bracket would be more central,in a yin and yang sort of balancing out styley, I don't think that's how it would have been explained all those years ago in C &G Mech Eng tech classes! Did I see somewhere you hadn't been well, if so get well soon, and hope you're out testing out the' superb clearances' again shortly. Off out up hill and indeed ' down dale'!

Re: Leg position on descents

Yes 'Aerodynamics ,that'll stop that 4.20 position becoming commonplace! I knew there must be a reason I hadn't seen it more often.I think still being a couple of stone overweight gives me all the speed I need going down hill. Gravity a double edged sword in cycling terms. Off out to do some more descent analysis, thanks again for all the replies.

Re: Leg position on descents

mjr, That made my brain hurt just trying to visualise 4.20 with feet off pedals, don't you tip backwards off the bike , all I can see is loads of people trying it in front of their computers, (which made me laugh at least). Thanks everyone for your replies, they've given me plenty to think about . I do put my leg down on bends and, I think, to brace myself if there's a cross wind if that makes any sense.

Re: Leg position on descents

Thanks Matt ,I don't particularly want to achieve any thing , I just wondered if one position had an advantage over the other which I was unaware of, getting to the bottom of a hill in one piece does for me, speed and comfort aren't particularly an issue.

Leg position on descents

Are there any advantages whilst freewheeling down hill in having your legs in the 12.30 (one leg down) position on the pedals, apart from shifting your weight for corners. This seems to be the most common way and I wondered why. I tend to descend in the 9.15 position (feet level, knees by the crossbar), I've tried the other way but this seems more natural to me somehow and my bike doesn't feel any more or less stable that I can tell. I've had a look around but haven't found it discussed ,apologies if it has ,then just the link would suffice. Thanks.

Re: Maybe we should all move to Groningen?

Maybe we should, the forecast says it's 3 degrees warmer than Coatbridge there tomorrow, these people you sold your motors to, did they have Dutch accents ? That might explain Groningens tropical January climate.
