Re: Scotland in June/July
I live in Dalbeattie,Dumfrieshire, moving here 7yrs ago ,partly because of the network of minor roads. Before that ,we were 7 yrs in Eaglesfied, about 30 mls east, with a similar network.Plenty of lumpy terrain in both places, great cycling, distant views, coast and estuaries and QUIET.Could do worse!

Fixing other peoples bikes.
I gave an old alloy Specialized mtb frame to a neighbour who then built it up into a single speed. As a newby on the street,he soon found he needed gears so I said I,d fix some up for him from my stash.Soon fettled an old long cage mech ,chain, sqr. taper bb,old double chainset.Something odd around the seat stem though ?A 1" alloy stem poking out of a 31mm ish seat tube with inner tube packing out the gap? Removed clamp......no joy. After some heat and oil ,got it to move ,eventually wrestling it out.It was an old quill stem for bars of course !!!!! I,d left the saddle on for leverage which hid the clues of it,s origin which would have saved me much blood sweat and tears.
I admired his use of available components even though misguided.

Re: Recumbent Tadpole Trike + DVT - Good Idea/Bad Idea?
I understand that logic of lighter, better ,more efficient bikes requiring less energy but, conversely, can you not also expend just as much energy as on a heavier machine by simply going faster. Also, recumbents are a slog uphill surely?

"Cycling burns very little calories......" ?I can,t agree with that I,m afraid.Pootling about town won,t use many cals.A 200km hilly audax sure as hell will. You,ll be hungry for a few days after.Tour riders are consuming up to 6-7000cals a day and these people still loose weight by the end of the Tour.Ok,this is an extreme example but please don,t insult our intelligence with uninformed statements.

Re: 1" headset threading, help me clear up the mess in my head
Is this an intellectual query or are you looking at buying something ? For what it,s worth, amonst my old steel bikes is an Italian framed machine which does have Italian threads at the bottom bracket.Never seem to have an issue elsewhere on the frames.

Re: Posting a bike frame.
Morning.I,ve bought two cyclo cross frames recently off ebay.Postage in the 15-20 pound region .Saying that,I did complain to the seller of one frame about the lack of packing material to the extent that part of the fork blade was sticking through.Postage seems very much a moveable feast on ebay though I suspect some pricing is artificially high as the seller doesn,t really wan,t to post the item.

Re: "Gravel" or what.
Cheers.+1 for the Planet X.Inboard bar position is a layout I,ve had on my full susp. bike for many years so made the decition to replicate on the road bikes. In a nutshell ,all my bikes have the same fit now and has moved on from "lets try this " to a permanent fixture. The inboard location enables a tucked in position as you,d get on a road bike when needed.Out yesterday on it ,a very steep hard gravel track showed up the need for a lower bottom...today,s job

This is purely a road bike and ,as such,I used any spare brakes I had.Whilst not the best brakes around ,they,re more than adequate for the road.mattheus wrote: ↑9 May 2024, 10:56am The Crosslight has gone through many evolutions ... [the later ones even have disc brakes ] ...

Purely road bikes,I should have made that clear.Nearholmer wrote: ↑9 May 2024, 9:57am They look like very practical bikes. How do you get on with such slick tyres off-road? I find that I have to have some knobbles, and go for small ones, otherwise I lose traction or control.

Nice.Comes with disc brake fittings on the rear . But I,m guessing you,d prefer them on the front.Wait.......you have got them on the back.......
